From the point of view of someone who uses a spindle moulder regularly I'm having a few difficulties with this. Whilst I can just about see the point of a DRO if you are machining something like dovetails it seems excessive overkill otherwise.the_g_ster":sdkism2n said:I was thinking some kind of system with a digital scale. It could be reset for reference against various different shaped cutters, and would work a treat for repeating cuts if you could get it to move correctly.
A spindle/shaper fence such as that used by Brad is secured by two bolts which go through slots into the table. Because the fence can pivot around either bolt if the fence is removed and then replaced, such as you would do for a series of curve cuts there's no guarantees that the fence will go back onto the table in the same place. In other words you'll lose your datum. That means you'll need to engineer in some way of retaining a datum point......
It's actually simpler to take a piece of scrap stock slightly taller that that which you are using for the actual cut and run it through the cutter before or after you cut rout your materials and then retain this set-up block for future setting up. After all, this is wood we're working, not titanium.
