To get the tables level and co planer you do need a decent straight edge, your end results will only be as good as the straight edge you use. I purchased the Veritas one from Fine tools on @MikeK 's recomendation and it makes things easier along with some feeler gauges. You can now get it from

Yea you are bang on with that. I have the exact same straight edge and it's great. Also got a set or feeler gauges which are a great help too
