Hi Folks
Just received my latest "review" mag from Axminster-it seems that Axminster and Lie-Nielsen are working a little closer together. Check out this site....
www.lie-nielsen.co.uk

See
They are advertising all the nik-naks we want but can never get our hands on in the UK (like screwdrivers, the chisels in all sizes, etc) although Axminster are showing out of stock for the bits I'm interested in.
Good to see Axminster making a bigger commitment to fine hand tools, though.
Cheers

It is! Don't see any rosewood handle options though! :D

Well that might explain Axminster's inexplicable decision not to stock the Veritas planes...

What's the advantage of making the customer click three and four more links to get to the same pages on Axminster's website? Where are the options of rosewood handles, left hand skew block and so forth? Where are the DVDs? Tsk, what a disappointment. :(

Cheers, Alf

from your peers."

Yuk and double yuk!!! Until and unless they remove this sort of thing I shall never buy another LN tool. (Thank goodness I have bought all the LN stuff I want!)

I can just see someone running into the House of Lords waving a #9 or summat and Their Lordships pointing and going "ooo", can't you? But maybe that's just me...

See, that could have been a good threat if you'd left off that last bit. Now if Philly said that, well I betcha that'd be gone before you can say "gloat"

Cheers, Alf

As someone with somewhat of a LN habit, I found the mailshot both unreasonable and irresistible :?

He, he
Well, got a response out of you. And Chris, that was a shameless L-N megagloat. Well done
Hey, well at least it looks like they are investing somewhat heavier than they have been. We don't really have a central "L-N centre" in the UK. I know you can order direct but the Duty always kills me.
And even though the flyer was a bit sickly it beats the "gem" I had off Tilgear the other day. Now there's a company that's moving into the future by staying in the past..... :? Check their website for evidence

Seems to me they've made an informational portal to their main site. Pity they don't at least [A] make it load into the same browser instance, or hook into their shopping cart system altogether without needing to actually add to the cart on the main site...BUT...

Always a but. The Veritas Tools website has neither, really. It is "only" informational. If you select a product you cannot actually order it. Clicking on the Dealer's list merely gives a choice of, well, dealers.

Clicking one of the dealers takes you as far as the home page of the selected dealer.

Seems to me that Axminster LN site is one step beyond that with taking one to the appropriate tool's order page. Give them time. And feedback. I would reckon they'll make it a smoother transition in time. They did, afterall, get this far.

Take care, Mike

I've been drooling over the mail shot today ..... I've only got a LN block plane but I want more ......... but my money is being directed at a different aspect of the hobby at the moment

Mailshot???? What mailshot???

I'm feeling left out here... mind you I did get a nice box of goodies from Ax today. One thing that always impresses me strangley is the really good packaging. Most other places I order from the packages are thrown together and the boxes are pretty much battered. Axminster boxes are always reusable in my experience and I love the big bubblewrap heh.

Mike, it's a fair point - but (and yes, there's always a but  ) the Veritas one is a worldwide site, not specifically a retail site for one country at all. It's not quite the same animal. Having said which the UK-specific central page for Veritas tools (on BriMarc's site) leaves a lot to be desired still, and you can't buy online from that either but have to find a dealer from a list.

I dunno, it just seems to me if Axminster's "shop by brand" set-up on their main site is up to snuff it makes this new one a bit pointless unless they're really offering something new. Which apparently they're not ('cos they're out of stock ](*,) ). So why bother and what about doing something about grouping the scattered Victor brand stuff in one place instead, 'cos shopping by brand doesn't work for that yet? If the plan is to improve then why not wait just a little longer 'til it's really wow-full rather than launching with a whimper? Sheesh, you could have used this to whip up a whole load of interest... Oh well, maybe I'm a terrible loss to the sales world or maybe they know what they're doing!

John, I haven't had the Review yet either. I never do get it as early as everyone else seems to - I believe it's a manifestation of Devonian jealousy of the Cornish...

Cheers, Alf

But Axminster aren't sellin the one thing I REALLY want from Lie-Nielsen:

http://www.lie-nielsen.com/catalog.php?grp=1351

Decent small saw-sharpening files.

Oh, BTW, at the (tail gating at the) Murland Auction I ran across a guy called John Gomm, selling mainly hand saws. He used to be a full-time saw doctor. Now I "thought" I was getting pretty good at saw sharpening until I saw his work :-( He direct orders files from Switzerland.

BugBear (still looking)

Keeping him to yourself, eh? :D

Me too, looks like belt fed ammo for a large calibre bubble gun.

I stomped on one of those big fellas when I had an Axminster delivery to the office - and nearly caused an evacuation when maintenance came running out to see what had blown. That's Serious bubble-wrap.

Not to mention the mummified cans of woodstain - enough cling-film for a month's sarnies if only you could get it undone.

.

That stuff is great, the kids love it.
Try giving it to the kids when SWMBO has a headache and you've just lost another arguement with her.

Ach, yes. And then when you get it started, do you risk holding one end and letting the tin roll, or might it go all of a sudden, plummet to earth and burst into unimmaginable mess? It's a dilemma I have every time - and every time I chicken out and end up twisting it round until can't move my hand instead. #-o

Vormulac, when you say "right" side do you mean "correct" or on the right bank? Obviously they're not the same thing...

Cheers, Alf

the most worrying thing about receiving my catalogue yesterday morning,
was that it looks more like an advert for a holiday in the states, since i
have only a small amount of the products.

i know the slope is long and slippery, but this is ridiculous.

but the pictures are pretty, and a constant reminder that i have many miles
to go before i sleep, and promises to keep, if only finish the cabinet i bought the cherry for.

Ah, I chose that particular phrase as I believed it covered both meanings rather nicely

I'm with you in the clingfilm though - I very nearly did the same thing with a tin of Liberon wax but realised I would end up looking like a rather lop-sided boxer (I cheated and took a razor to it instead!) :D
