Auriou too expensive?

I think so.

I don't mean that they are over-priced neccesarily, just that they cost too much for a rasp.

So, after the Big Bash was over, me and Philly got to playing in the garage and I tried out his Auriol and a chinese (hand-stitched) rasp. Auriol definitely a better quality tool, but the chinese rasp impressed me. They give a very nice finish and cut very well - so much better than my machine stitched rasps.

I bought SIX for half the price of ONE Auriou!!!

I am supremely impressed with them and this is one woodworker who will never own an Auriou whilst the chinese company makes these hand-stitched rasps.

Got them from Dick

I must confess, while I like the single Auriou I have and it does an excellent job, those Chinese ones do appeal. Mind you some poor fella in Ding Dong Province is probably making 100 of them for half a bowl of rice, as opposed to a Frenchman making half of one for le Big Mac avec Pommes Frites, which does bother me somewhat. :? But then that seems to be the difference betweeen them - labour costs. :(

Incidentally, a nail brush makes a good brush for cleaning rasps, fwiw.

Cheers, Alf

Good point. I saw a program on the beeb a while back that claimed that Chinese country folk come to the city, work 7 12-hour days a week for 5 years and then return home to the countryside very well-off and setup for a fairly comfy life compared to their country counterparts. A billion to replace them in the factories too. They reckoned that this will be China's strength compared to Taiwan et al.
The program posits that this will continue until the workers demand health and safety, better pay, sick pay etc. etc. etc.

I don't like to think of the poorly paid (by our standards) workers, but the Auriou are too costly for me.

Nice tip, thanks - I have a useless nail brush from the rat

Yeah, that's why I've only got one. :(

Tsk; the other half of my mine is in regular 'Rat use - your nail brush may be too limp for rasp cleaning in that case.

I bought one of those Chinese 'swordfish' rasps - that's the fourth one down in tony's pic - over 15 years ago, fine cut for a rasp and it gives you the option of having a 'spoon rasp' if you so desire.

Glad you like them, Tony! They are great value.
With rasps (as with most tools) it is good to have coarse, medium and fine version available-and at these prices you can afford too!
Cheers
Philly :D
