Just thought I would show why I didn't enter the August challenge

I decided to make a goblet from a manky old branch from an apple tree. All was going well hollowing out the cup with a 3/4" spindle gouge and scraper. I then shaped the outside and stem again using spindle gouges. Finally after sanding to 600 and polishing with friction polish the time came to part it off. ......... Disaster.!!!! I used a record parting knife which was going fine until about 1/2" from the centre when I got a bad catch. The result was a lump missing from the base of the goblet.

The form and proportions of that goblet are outstanding.

I would have been hard-pressed to separate it from Denisk's for first place.

I agree, it is a very nice piece.

Thanks for the comments. I had actually thought of making a new base for it in a contrasting wood so may not be a complete failure.

Not wishing to blow my own trumpet but please check the placings again

My apologies procell I should have mentioned that your goblet is a very good design and very well turned as normal for you. Shame about the foot.

I know I have done that usually on the very last little cut "I.ll just touch up that bit" and OOOPS there goes another fine piece

Sorry Dalboy - I wasn't referring to the official placings, just my own opinion about the shape. Personally I found your goblet too 'soft' and of those that were entered I thought Denisk's was way ahead as far as the design was concerned.

I wouldn't have made any negative comment if procel hadn't posted.
