I love ash.

Here are a few things I've used it for which might give you some ideas..

I don't know how to turn so can't offer any advice about that though

Cheers
Mike

i was thinking about doing that to the legs to make them look thicker

sawdust, I have probably asked you this before. What did you finish all the lovely ash with?

Thanks,

They are all finished in finest B&Q matt varnish - the quick drying, water based, low odour stuff. I find it works a treat and as we have three dogs, two kids (far messier that the dogs), it's hard wearing and can take the occasional cup being put down on it.

Mike

Pinky,

I'm not suggesting you make anything like this:

but will just say that ash is a lovely wood to work with, and can make excellent furniture......only don't make the mistake that I have made with it in the past of using Danish Oil on it. As you can see from the photo, it takes on a nasty yellow/orange/pee colour after a few months.

Ash steams well, BTW, so if you have any bent-wood ideas in mind, ash is a good wood to try it with.

Mike

PS PM coming seperately....

I'm a big fan of ash too, when we get our own place (this year, at long last, I hope, please....) I'm going to be working with it a lot, coupled with a black accent line which I'd like to use another british wood like bog-oak for.

Has anyone else noticed that it's not as cheap as it used to be? It now seems to be the same price per cube as beech and oak whereas it was 20% less, or is it just me?

Aidan

American Ash has some nice figuring, or the two boards I have purchased the last three years. Cleaner than sycamore.

Ash is lovely for tool handles - right up to pitchfork length!
But we had two huge ash trees in the garden of our last house that removed all the water from the clay under the footings. Cost the insurance company the thick end of £20k, so (logically!) SWMBO won't have things made of ash in the house :)

Very nice work Mike. I agree entirely. Ash is a rewarding timber to work with and not excessively priced. I use it as much as I can in the good times. Now SWIMBO wants it in her kitchen!

:D :D :D

I don't know Aiden. I've just bought 2 lengths 7'x6"x1" Ash RS and they told me that Ash and Utile were their cheapest hardwoods, if I wanted something like Oak I would have to pay about 25% extra.

Could anyone tell me how much Ash costs and if it is a similar price to the UK please? I'm not very good at working it out

Ash is lovely, but boy does it like to tear out. Get your card scrapers sharpened and don't be afraid to use sand paper if it's beating you. DAMHIKT

I love that CD rack, I think I'll have to plan something similar although a new DVD rack is in order first... many with some room for my projector screen... oh, the ideas :D
