Steve,

To be honest that bowl looks fairly good for one of your first. Keep hold of it, its great to look back in a few weeks/months time.

my early ones have faceplate screw holes in them, but im keeping them to laugh at !

Can't add much to what everyone else has said, about ensuring a dovetailed recess ( or a spigot is preferable ).

less lines on the base suits better, most will decorate with 3 i think.

Hi Steve,

It's all practice I'm affraid!!

I too use a spigot (rather than recess) when bowl turning as they are easier to remove and give a simpler and more effective grip (in many peoples opinion, not just mine!!)

My reversing technique is like this:

I think the picture is quite self explanatory but if you have any questions please ask!!

(This method does rely on you marking the centre with the point of a skew or similar BEFORE remounting on the spigot!!)

Hope this helps,

Richard

Richard - I hope you don't mind if I take your advice also. Could you tell me what you use for the black grippy stuff, and is that actually stuck permanently to the round faceplate?

PS - sorry - have since read lots of answers to my question. I chucked an old record turntable out the other day. I now wish I had kept the rubber circle, as it had rings all the way down it. Would have been perfect.

Steve

You will get the hang of it soon I had some right c**k ups to start with.

Richard

I believe we will be seeing you on wednesday at the club ( EVWA) hope you've got something good for us, as i'Me sure you will.

LW - Richard was confirming.. its ROUTER MATTING.

You can get sheets of it from Siles & Bates, amongst other places.

Its like rubber matt ... it takes a good grip ! 8)

Thanks Jenx. I finally got the message.

Don't worry ! its easy to miss something with so many and so much info everywhere !

Other people may know good sources for it ( the router matting ) ... I've certainly seen it in S&B catalogue ... but no doubt there will be other places to get some too. 8) :D

thanks for all the info guys, i think i will be using a spigot from now on. I am also going to make myself one of Richards tables too, looks good to me and i have a lot of matting spare.
Roll on my next day off..
