Arrrrrgh, Planer Thicknesser just Blew up....

What a sh#t day, again......
Half way through milling up some 3x2 ish Tulip Wood, to laminate up to make an 18" x 2 3/4" bowl as a one off for wedding present.

No real rush, till mid September, so left the job on the back burner, so got round to starting the preparation, jointer/planer and thicknesser jobby first, easy......

Going along nice and gentle with the thicknessing then a whiff of something electrical, but before I could react there was a flash, bang and sparks out of the front of the machine and smoke....

Quick unplug and pushed it out of the workshop, thankfully had it mounted on cabinet base with castors.

No injury, other than I think my wallet.

Let it cool, no flame but horrid burning plastic smell.

Just stripped it down, removed the motor to find it seized and partially melted.

It is/was an Erbauer ERB052BTE, about 7-8 years old, so no chance of getting a motor.

So the damage to my wallet is gonna be 10 to 15 times the cost of the platter........

So, any recomendations, sub £300 used or new.
Doesn't get heavy use, no lengths over 4 feet, but will be used on mahogany, oak and the like for making bowl blanks etc

Any chance a tool repair shop, one that fixes drills, sanders, routers etc, might have a motor from a router or similar that would fit? Long shot but worth a try.

Thought of similar, after calming down.
It looks a fairly standard, 4 hole mount.
I need to get all the specs together, rpm input and output wattage, spindle Dia etc and start a hunt before getting another planer/thicknesser, but time is pressing.

There are companies that specialise in rewind/builds on motors if you can find one where you are.

At £143 from B&Q why not junk the entire unit and buy another Erbauer 1280W Planer thicknesser ERB052BTE | DIY at B&Q

If you have had yours for 7-8 years, and it has only now ceased to be, it owes you nothing.

Look like B&Q have discontinued it. But Screwfix have the Titan TTB579PLN (S/Fix 15774) for £159:99 . Lots of positive reviews.

Heya, that looks like a bog standard universal motor, I just removed one very similar from my washing machine..... if you have time, you could go to your local recycling place and see if there's any machines going.... they sometimes plug them in to see if they fire up ( and some people dispose of working machines tell the tip guys the machine is OK)

I have the Screwfix Titan P/T and it looks like the same machine as the Erbauer - different badge. Possibly interchangeable bits?

Google Motor rewind in Liverpool seem to be several and one in Speke if thats any good for you

Is there a sticker on it/can you find it on google to know what you're after?
There should be specs on it, like RPM and maybe frame size on this universal brush motor.
Bob's/ myfordman's induction motor document is more concerning induction motors, but has a little on those also, might be worth a read.

It might be possible to get a spare for cheap should they have standard mounting bits.
Bet you could find one for a more commonly sold mitre saw.

Update folks....

No details on motor for spec' s so can only describe it to possible motor suppliers and only other info is machine label, not much success yet.

So decided to dig deeper into it.

Took some effort, but managed to free up the stator and remove it.
It looked like it had been in a small fire, carbon bits burnt on etc.

So have given it a clean and sanded (gently) stator, wiring looks ok, now looks like new.
The armature in same state. Given it same treatment.

Bearings ok, no rumble but back of plastic/ABS cover housing for bearing a bit deformed.

Everything spins freely now BUT, when I try to tighten aluminium front housing onto body it would start to tighten up an not spin easily.

So looks like heat build up deformed the housing.

Managed to shim the face and mount and tighten down the aluminium housing now ad it all spins freely and quietly now.

So all ready to put it back back together and wire up to test it, but that's later, fingers crossed and will let you know.

Well, all went fine, for a second or two, then rumble, bang and now it's a deceased planer.

So I've decided on a replacement, but a bigger 10" instead. Just to find one.

Take a look at Oriton tools, they sell the same machine but badged as Fox. When I bought a router table from them it was cheaper than other sellers by about 20%. The planer is currently £262 +vat

I had a quick look on the bay and utube to see someone replacing these universal brush motors
with on luck, as I was likely using the wrong terminology.

I suggest you wait and see what others have to say,
as that new machine looks to be the same deal with a screaming motor which are very irritable.

If set on buying a new machine, I suggest you look for a new or used machine with an induction motor, as those other motors clearly aren't designed to last.

Other options might be to see if you can fit one to your existing machine.

Bid on a few older style ones, but getting outbid, people are paying silly money for these machines, some have been almost as new prices, and I don't think it's worth the risk, as new can get 1, 2 or even 5 year guarantee for only a little more.
