Someone told me Argos do a granite block £9.99. Is quite a bit cheaper than Axminsters for £55.I'm assuming the Argos block is perfectly flat.

Just go to a granite supplier, they will give you an offcut rather than fill their skip.

i dont have a granite block as i would need quite a large one, but old pool table slates are pretty flat so i acquired one of them... does the job.

Are the Axminster ones certified flat?
The Argos one certainly won't.
I've got a certified plate that I use for metal work
and have checked a few planes on it but a sheet of flat glass is much easier to handle.

Using granite or glass as a chopping board is a big no-no it will just blunt your knives faster.

not only is it a big no no, the sound is horrible, everytime I hear a knife on a glass chopping board, it makes me cringe.
