Called in to see my parents on Sunday afternoon - Over a cuppa was told that the pine bench I had made them about 14 years ago had almost collapsed and that they had bought a replacement from the garden centre.

Ok the replacement had only cost them £39:99 but it was absolute rubbish, white spruce, most of it already split and twisted before they even attempted to assemble it. My immediate reaction was to ask why they hadn't asked me to run them one up only to get the answer "We know how busy you are and we didn't want to trouble you"

Anyway - I took their new purchase back and got a refund for them on Monday morning on my way to the workshop and went into "Mailee Mode" and with Sarah's help we got this made and delivered at lunchtime today.

Solid Oak - Dad is going to finish it and hopefully it will last them a bit longer than the rubbish they had bought!

All that my parents have done to help us over the years this is the least we could do for them.

Would it not benefit from a center support leg ?

No Blister there isn't any need for a central leg - It is very solid. Well put it this way I sat on it and it didnt move!!

GOOD GOD ROGER! What are you on?? I thought I was rapid but that takes the cake! Excellent mate and a very nice bench too. To say I am well impressed would be an understatement, well done. Oh, my Mum and Dad used to be like that too always thinking I was too busy to build something for them.

nice work :D super quick too !

would you consider a triangle brace on the back to the center back upright ? Or something similar ...
There is very little to stop it racking and loosening the joints over time .

That really does look the mutt's, it almost looks as if it wants to recline! Have you got a plan you worked to or was it all just from your head?

Straight from the head - not a drawing in sight!

I have made a few like this over the years and they have lasted very well and are very robust.

There is no need for a middle support and it gives slight flex in the seat - in answer to a previous comment I have never had one rack yet.

Well to finish this thread, I was at my parents today and the bench has now been finished with some Sadolin and has pride of place in amongst my mothers flowers!

hey Roger that looks great love the curves, it looks almost soft. Made in a week, wow I'll have to ask you for tips on working faster! Oh and don't say give my GF a whip as there's no space in the workshop for another body!!
