Are Veritas planes usable straight out of the box? I've heard LN one's are, but not sure if Veritas are the same. I'm thinking of spoiling myself with a new purchase for the workshop.

All of mine have been. Of course - I always give the irons a little hone, but that's just me
Hope this helps
Philly :D

Yes, Most definately useable. I have the LAJ and the BUS, and that's all I've ever done to them is hone the iron.

If you're after a "first"* quality plane, then the LAJ is probably your best bet as it can joint (edges up to around 4 foot) and smooth with the best of them.

They're very good!!!

Cheers

Aled

*Trust me, this will be the first of many, using a quality plane for the first time really is a lightbulb moment.

I now own a bevel-up smoother and both an apron and scraping plane, all of which have been "dangerously" sharp out of the box. Still, like Philly, I also prefer to give them a quick honing before use.

Yep, dangerously sharp. My New LAS was shaving endgraing happily once setup. I will hone it further. But it certainly did a fine job out of the box.

I hope they are, just been on the internet and ordered a low angle block plane :D

i ordered one of them for £100 now like 150

it is quite sharp but i was still told to sharpen it before using it.. did test it tho

exactly why i ordered one, Rutlands still had them at £90 so thought I'd get in before they go out of my price range

Of the two Veritas planes I have both only needed to be polished , where the three 3 LN's needed the backs flattened and polished. The Veritas blades seem to stay sharper longer and sharpen easier. I have the Block your buying and use it constantly, it's brill. Buy the Low Angle Jack too you wont regret it! and the Medium Shoulder...
