Apple Leopard - DON'T (Updated)

Ok - muggins here just couldn't wait.

Tried to install it in my Dual processor G4 - well within the minimum spec.

Said G4 now currently and expensive door stop.

After a couple of hours the install gave up the ghost telling me Installation Failed and a screenful of error log. But not before totally trashing my system disk. I can't even boot up from my external firewire backup disk such is the efficiency with which Leopard has trashed my system.

So...don't be an early adopter like me.

EDIT Bit the bullet. Erased my main boot disk. Installation went flawlessly and took about 30 minutes. Leopard migrated over all my data and network and account settings flawlessly. And so 45 minutes later (including the install) I'm up and running with Leopard. And well worth the wait!

From what I've read the new back up facility (Time Machine) won't let you burn to a DVD, is this correct?
I may well invest (after the dust has settled) in Leopard just for the backup but I did not really want to buy an external drive.

Dick - it's a Yes

Andy - I wouldn't expect Time machine to be able to burn DVDs because of the way it works. External disks are very cheap these days and well worth having, I reckon.

I'll second that. I use a couple of FireLite drives. The are about 100Gb and need no external power supply. In fact I've just moved my iPhoto library onto one to free up space on my laptop.

Sadly my G5 has died - it chimes on startup but the screen stays black. After a while it goes into helicopter mode. Any ideas?

I'll second that. I use a couple of FireLite drives. The are about 100Gb and need no external power supply. In fact I've just moved my iPhoto library onto one to free up space on my laptop.

I'd guess they are USB drives then. You're probably aware that you can't boot from them IIRC?

The chime is encouraging.
Have you tried the usual like resetting PRAM? Have you tried a re-install from your CDs? Have you tried booting in safe mode? Try holding the option key down when you power up. You should see your boot drive as one of the options to boot from. If you do then that's a positive sign.

They are Firewire drives - very small and useful. I have all my school files on one, and can use it through my laptop onto the Smart board. Very cool, very useful. The other one has all my photos on it.

I haven't tried starting in safe - thanks for reminding me, I'll give it a try. I think it may be the graphics card, though.

I thought Time computers had gone bust.

Thanks roger. mind you if it was a 36" screen perhaps quality might be noticed but at 19" I doubt I could tell the difference.

Cant you? I can boot my (linux based)pc from a usb memory stick should I feel the urge / need. I can't imagine that a mac wouldn't boot from usb devices though you may have to access bios settings to achieve it. You can boot a windows machine from USB stick as well so you must be able to boot an apple box similarly, surely.

Perceived wisdom lets one down occasionally. You're right. A bit more research shows it can be done with some tweaking and/or other software but, in my defence, looks to be a relatively new implementation.
