No, not tying two pieces of string together, but the stuff you put on the knots in bare wood to stop them bleeding prior to painting.

We have been met with blank looks by decorators and shop assistants alike when we have asked about it.

Seems wood primer is also not heard of here. Only "sous couche" is offered when we ask about preparing bare wood. Sous couche appears to me to be purely an undercoat not the familiar pink, or grey primer, that I am more used to.

Cheers

Andy who now regrets throwing out so many half empty tins prior to moving :x

Best I can come up with is noueux, pertaining to wood knots? and raboteux (something to do with planes?? )

Thanks Dick,

do you get yours in Blighty because it is hard to get here or for quality reasons?

Cheers

Both. Some French paint/varnish is OK, but that tends to be expensive and available from specialist outlets. The general DIY stuff is poor, both in quality and price. Drying times measured with a calendar! Monocouche is the most abused word in the French language. It doesn't even cover itself in a single coat.
Where I make the distinction is exterior paint, which really needs to be formulated for the UV conditions for the area it is to be used in, and I am told that UK paints aren't up to the job, even for Normandy.

Which I wish I was in! How is the weather there at the moment?

Dick,
thanks.
Weather unseasonably warm. We've had daffs in flower for more than a fortnight.
First rain this morning for what seems like a month.

cheers
