Anyone got an electric paint sprayer?

Recommendations please!

I've got a few jobs coming up that need painting. A number of these are "well funded" so I'm thinking of using the proceeds from these to invest in an electric paint spraying system.

I've been watching Peter Millards "playing at spraying" series and the issues he's had with the Graco Ultra have put me off the airless systems so I'm set on the electric HVLP route. I also don't really want to go down the compressor + gun option as I want the portability and less workshop space it consumes.

The option of swapping guns appeals as I could swap over when wanting to spray primer and top coats in the same day. Spare parts should be easy to come by and the unit packs up into itself.

The single review isn't great but that is three years old and I believe the model has been changed since that was posted. Also Axminster after sales service is always good.

I don't know anything about Apollo or Air Supplies but that doesn't mean they aren't good.

Have any of our community members got any sprayers they would recommend?

My budget runs to £3-400 but if good results and reliable operation can be had for £200 I wont complain!
FYI I only use water-based paints and will probably be using it for 4 hours a week.

I'd been getting a terrible finish brushing Dulux water based paint, so decided to give spraying a go and bought a Wagner XVLP 3500 from http://www.sprayman.co.uk.

I first tried it with the same Dulux paint and it was a complete disaster. Having done more research and reading the thread below, I bought some Benjamin Moore paint as seems to be used by a lot of professional decorators, and the finish I've been getting is transformed.

Also for me, getting multiple coats on (even allowing for time masking up if necessary) is much quicker.

Hi Will. Can you point me in the direction of that thread/forum please? The issues I had with the Graco are long resolved, and I've posted about it on YouTube; wouldn't want anyone using the faulty tip on my Graco to put them off airless as it has lots of benefits, but as with many systems there are compromises, overall.

Benny Moore's very nice, and a great range of colours, but very slow drying time (certainly on the advanced gloss) made it very hard to use when I used it. Been very happy with Tikkurila Hilmi as a general sprayable finish.

My only experience is with the Graco Ultramax cordless, just so’s were clear.

I’d say the biggest limitation of it is that it’s a bit of a blunt instrument; lots of advantages / benefits for someone new to spraying - easy set up, easy cleaning, easy change between paints/finishes, no mucking around with thinning paints down or viscosity cups, etc.. etc..

But it’s not subtle, it throws out a lot of paint, and has a limited-life pump, so not for someone who does a lot of spraying. But for someone new to spraying, or who needs to spray onsite, or who doesn’t have water/waste in the workshop, or needs to do any of the things mentioned above it’s a great sprayer.

One of the advantage's of HVLP over all other types of spray equipment, beside the obvious less overspray is the hot air carrying the paint dries the surface of the paint quicker, so less liable to get dust and marks on the finish.

Thank GPB, I read that thread all the way through and it's got me sold on the Wagner FC3500 XVLP machine.

Will be ordering it in the next week or two. Once I've given it some use I'll post a bit of a review.

Just a quick note on the Wagner FC3500 XVLP, from what I can see of the gun it will be difficult to spray anything other than vertical, the pressure hose to the paint canister is at the back of the container and will fill with paint when used at an angle, spraying a door on trestles will be impossible as the gun can not be held at the correct angle, this is IMO as I do not know if the gun is adjustable for this, i.e. moving the pressure hose of the container, just a thought that you may wish to ask where you buy from.

Good point.

It's one reason I like airless - I can have the nozzle pointing in any direction (I have a swivel and a short extension lance).

I just could not get on with airless, whatever I did it just did not give the finish I was looking for, found HVLP easier to get the desired finish and much more control over the paint patten and coverage, plus less bounce back and less overspray.
