Bob, I was in Toscane in 2005 and 2008.
Also in Lucca, a nice town, actually whole Toscane is very beautiful, very worthy for making a roundtrip if you have the time. In my view is Toscane the most beautiful area of Italy.

It will be our first time in Tuscany and we really look forward to it. I am busy booking an apartment within the walls of lucca town as we like to walk to restaurants in the evenings and soak up the atmosphere but we will have a rental car and the train station is close by so we intend to see as much of the area as possible.
We only have 1 week in Lucca then will drive on to Garda for our second week.
We stayed in Bardolino at lake Garda a few years ago so we know the area a little and will of course go to Venice again - always worth another visit.
Italy is a beautiful country (Drivers are one of a kind though!!!)
Fantastic place, stayed on Tuscan/Umbrian border last year, tiny medieval village called Lippiano. Loved the area, the people, the food, the wine and the weather. Italy rocks!
We went to Fiuggi south of Rome last year.
Drove quite a bit, beautiful views, fantastic roads to drive, I found the other drivers to be fine.
We're going to Rome for 9 days at the end of next month [no car!].
It's not Tuscany but I'm looking forward to it and it seemed like a good excuse to boast.
Siena is fantastic.
Florence is too.. quite a lot of Nigerian Beggars which doesn't suit the place at all.. but check out the Uffizi & the Duomo, the Ponte Vecchio etc.. all great !
San Gimignano is a lovely wee hilltop village.. got a fantastic Torture Museum there too.
Lucky you! You can't really go wrong. We had a week staying here. Very highly recommended. Siena, Florence, Voltarra, and San Gimignano all worth a visit. Also if you are near the walled village of Monteriggioni in the evening, one of the restaurants in the castle square is a really romantic place to eat.
Enjoy. Basically, just climb everything in sight - especially the Duomo in Florence, the tower in Siena and one of the towers in San Gim.
Italy is fantastic. As a holiday, anyway. I don't know what it would be like living there. I've been looking at property. We moan about 3.5% Stamp Duty. Over there it is 11% if you are non-resident! Lots of fantastic property at low prices - mainly because it is in the middle of nowhere and derelict.
OK, that is in Emilia Romagna rather than Tuscany where prices are higher, but you get my point. Any many of the properties are in a far worse state than that one.
I'm trying to get a job in Rome (well anywhere actually, but Rome would be a good experience even if it were not for the rest of my life). My Italian is a bit arrugginito, but not non-existent.
thanks for all the advice guys. I've made a list to include.
We had shorlisted Lucca and San Gimignano to stay but chose Lucca as we found an apartment inside the walled town which suited us. Will visit San G though as well as Florence and we'll try the others you recommended.
Garda:
why do we need a head for heights Stevebuk?
We were there a few years ago and don't remember a problem. (come to think of it, the wifie wouldn't go up in the cablecar  )
Rome:
Monkeybiter - you'll love it. we went for 4 days and it wasn't anywhere near enough time.
We walked so much we got blisters, but there's something around every corner and the atmosphere around the forum and coliseum is indescribable.
Along with Nice and Barcelona, it's one of the few cities I would visit more than once.
drivers:
They were bloody manic around Garda. Winding roads and they spent most of the time on the wrong side or up your boot (and I'm a quick driver).
Put the wind up the missus every trip.
