I want to bid in an antiques auction on what is essentially a small wooden box. I haven't go the exact dimensions but it's about (roughly) 20" by 5". I know I can send one like that for about £8 (with insurance) by royal mail. unfortunately the auction house doesn't offer a postal services but recommend the services of a company that auction houses use called Mailboxes etc. They will collect it, package and post it. Unfortunately when I spoke to the company they estimated it would cost me about £47 + vat to do this. It's just not worth it for that. It's a two hour drive to the auction house in Beccles in Suffolk from my home.

Anyone have any ideas?

When and where is the auction? I may be able to help collect it as I live not too far from Beccles, but I work in London all week so my time is limited. If I collect it, I could post it to you at royal mail rates. :)

Edit: I presume the auction is at Durrants on 14 May, since it's about the only house near there? If so, I may be having that day off work, so a trip out to Beccles could be a possibility.

How annoying that they won't pack it! I don't know of any companies that will pack things. But as SPinonit says, a forum member might be able to help.

Oh, my goodness. What a kind offer. It is indeed Durrants on 14th May. I would be leaving a commission bid and hope to be successful but you never know. They would normally hang on to small items for a few days (I would ring and pay over the phone) but I wouldn't know until the end of the auction if I've been successful or not.

Hey Rob, look, I figure there's no point 'joining' a community such as this unless you're prepared for a bit of give and take. I'm happy to do you a favour like this, as I can't offer you any woodworking advice or tips [not just yet]. Consider it my'give', in lieu of some 'take' that I might need from forum members by way of tips and advice.

If you win the box, let me know and I should be fine to fetch it, so long as they are open on Saturdays, or if you know early enough on that day. Beccles is only about half an hour / 20 miles - which is far as I usually have to go for just about anything around here.

HTH
Steve :)

This is really very kind of you. They are open on the saturday morning after the sale from 9-12. I'll PM you if that's ok and obviously I would owe you big favour.

How refreshing to see this sort of cameraderie on the forum , which in my humble opinion, is what the site is all about . :)

I'm posting to complain most strongly against SPinonits Avatar and Tag line. They are FFF.. FFooo... FFFFooooo... Football related and must therefore be against the rules?
