Hi all,

Currently I have a £5 facemask from B&Q which mists up my safety goggles when I use it (which puts me off using it). Therefore I've started looking into an alternative and having read the threads on the forum it seems the Trend Airshield was very popular. As that is now being phased out and replaced by the Airpro is anyone intending to buy one (it does seema lot of money but I can't find a similar alternative).

input appreciated

I will have to dump my Airshield in a year or so, when filters are no longer available. However, I doubt very much if I will buy another Trend. I think the way they treated their customers with the new legislation was not good. It was only a few months after paying full price for my Airshield, that I found out I would not be able to get parts. They continued to sell them until recently, and the only place I have seen mention that they would be discontinued was this forum.

There are other options which have been discussed here before. Do a search for "respirator".

Indeed. And having read the legislation it seems that they use it as an excuse to push a complete new product on the market. Also the filtration efficiency drop problem of certain electro static filter materials in a high moisture environment is not new. The political debate and various legislation changes in Europe dates back a few years.

Assuming it has now passed it's certification and is now available it will be interesting to see at what price point it settles to achieve a market share, I have seen prices quoted anywhere between £169 & £225.

The design Looks to be a big ergonomic improvement but as they did not have it at Ally Pally show have not had a chance to give it a once over for vulnerable bit of plastic etc. which the existing model suffers from.

thanks all for the responses, its pretty much what confirmed i'd read on the other threads : people aren't happy with trend for how they've handled the airshield but there isn't an alternative thats proved such a hit. depending on the price of the airpro i'll probably be going for that (but will dig about looking for alternatives in the meantime)

Mighty G.
I have had the Trend for 3 years and I find it fragile and not particularly comfortable which is why it spends most of the time unused. I wish I had gone for the Power Cap that I tried at a show some years ago anf found very comfortable. As to it's filtering capabilities, I cannot comment.
Cheers,
Gower

When I have to bin my airshield I am certainly not going to give Trend another penny ...

What in God's name are you b*tching about? The filters will be available until the END of 2010. You have THREE years to build up a stock pile of filters if you think you will still be using it more than FOUR years from now. How long does a filter last anyway....

B*tch, b*tch, b*tch. Trend must be a complete bunch of barstewards forcing you to throw away a product three years from now for reasons completely beyond their control...

You are completely missing the point. The fact is that up until this month, Trend were still selling the Airshield, with no mention that they would be discontinued. It is quite a considerable outlay for something to only last three years.

Er, no. You are still missing the point. It doesn't have to last only 3 years. You can buy as many filters as you like NOW and for the next THREE years (if the motor is still working by then). It requires some planning but you might be able to get a good five years or more out of it. It's not as if the spare filters will fill a garage.

Thee are no guarantees that if you buy the Airshield Pro (or the Mk1 for that matter) that it will last forever or even three years anyway. New products come old ones go.

If Trend were still selling the old model with no mention of it being withdrawn then that is a bit naughty, but then I can't confirm whether that is true or not. I received my 2008/2009 catalogue MONTHS ago and it's pretty clear that the MK1 is no longer available as only replacement parts are mentioned on p113.

I just cant stand this continual slagging of companies who have done nothing wrong, merely because some people expect their favourite product to last until 2050/their death/the Queen abdicates, which ever comes first.

Er no it is you who are missing the point. If you read Trends post properly they were selling the Airshield until FEBRUARY 2008, and they NEVER told new buyers of the Mk1 as you call it that the model was being withdrawn from sale in Feb. They were still being sold by their agents until Feb 2008, so what ever your catalogue does or does not say they were still selling them. In fact one of our members bought one just before Trends post.

Also again if you read their post they state that spare parts with be sold for a further year, so someone who bought one say in Feb 2008 and the motor went in April 2009 would have NOT be able to get a replacement motor. Do you think 14 months is a good deal for £150?

As for the filters I just cannot believe that they could not have made a new type filter to fit the old Airshield.

Now to you being unable to stand the continual slagging off of companies, if you search the site you will find that there are many more posts praising companies, and I am sure before long you will see a post that praises Trend for something or other.

Cheers

Mike

Only if you know about the situation. What about the people who bought the Airshield just before they were discontiued. Do they have to have internet access and trawl through the forums just to find out that their brand new unit will only last three years.

Why? A £200 respirator should absolutely last three years IMO. If we were talking about a £200 table saw or something then maybe not, but that is at the cheap end for tablesaws. The Airshield is very much at the expensve end of the market, and as such should perform and last.

The only reason we found out was because someone brought up the subject on this forum, and Trend responded. It may not have been in your catalogue, but we were told by Trend that it would remain on sle until Feb 2008.

No-one is suggesting that it is Trend's fault that the Airshield is being discontinued. It is the way they have gone about it that stinks. They have tried to squeeze every last penny out of it.

Especially if the legislation requires or an filter that remains efficient enough under high moister conditions or has a warning label the filter may not be used under high moister conditions (or kept, that is a little vague).

Also in the post by Trend they state they can't sell and or keep producing filter because there is a ban on static filters which there isn't.

Background info on problems with electrostatic filters

European Council revision to EN 143

Hi,

I had a comparable problem with the Racall / 3M Dustmaster i bought years ago. It was not for sale in The Netherlands then as far as I know. Bought one with Axminster while on holiday. When I wanted some extra filters on my next stay in Britain they were discontinued, no more filters available. I was not happy with 3M.

Of course the Dustmaster has been reintroduced, and I have sufficient spares by now.
By the way, I think the Dustmaster / Triton more comfortable than the powered filters with the motor and battery pack on your head.

Hans

ps I still try to avoid buying from 3M.

Hans do I understand you correctly when say that the actual Racal/Dustmaster has been reintroduced or at least the spares to fit the old model?

Cheers

Mike
