At present my workshop in a largish single garage 22' x 12' ajoined to the house. I've been pestering HID's about extending into the garden.

As we only have a small garden I will only be able to extend length 14' and width 8', but this will really make a significant addition to the existing shop, which at present has everything on castors.

I've gone as far as talking to a building friend of mine, who is prepared to do it all at cost which is a real bonus.

But alas HID's has still not agreed entirely even though nearly everyone I know has been primed to tell her what an advantage it would be. Does anyone else have this problem with workshops permission or do you just go ahead?

Waka - you need to put your foot down with a firm hand, just like the rest of us do   - Rob

Man, I'd kill for a 22' by 12' space!
I currently work out of a 13' X 10' dumping ground! Good luck with the extension (said through envious gritted teeth!!!)

Hi Waka, I had to barter for half the garden as long as I built a greenhouse for HID onto the backend of my workshop, I readilly agreed to this as it gives more insulation to my workshop (wealth by stealth as it were) mind you, I'm getting stick as the greenhouse is still WIP, (hee hee)
Regards, Rich.

Waka, I am also giving serious thought to moving to a bigger workshop elsewhere in the garden. There is plenty of room, if location is further from house.

Missus is not keen on allowing an extension to my existing shed which will involve moving path etc. (This is tiny 10 x 8.)

I have the blessing to go ahead, but will have to pay for everything including the hot tub which is apparently going on the end of the new building!

Just how big should a decent workshop be? and if rectangular what are thoughts on minimum width? How does 24 x 12 sound?

I can see this is going to involve spending some money.

On another note are you going to Ally Pally this year? (another opportunity to spend money :) )

Tony

Guys your all right, there's no way I'd go ahead without permission, although in a conversation a few minutes ago, she did say that I need to phone up the planning guys at the council to see if I need planning permission.

I've also said I'd make room for her gardening tools and lawnmower, this convincing HID's that its the right way forward is really hard work.

Esc, doesn't matter how big your workshop is, you'll always want more, I've lived with mine for 13 years and the reason for the extension is becasue I've started spilling over into the other garages, and trust me she really is putting her foot down there.

Whats a chap to do, you can't live with them and you can't live without them.

Yes I will be going to Ally Pally this year, got to check in with the famous plane maker to see when he's going. Mind you being a pensioner funds will be tight, but I'm willing to help other spend on the bargains.

Well Tony My workshop is 24' x 13' and I could still do with more. (couldn't we all) I still ended up with most of my machines on castors to give me more room. I think it is a case of you make the most of what you have.

That sounds like a green light to me

I'd get your mate booked in asap.

Cheers

My workshop is 36 x 11 , I am very lucky to have the space in the garden. I originally built the workshop 20 x 11 for my model aeroplane building but as time went on the woodwork demanded more space and so built the extension. If I was to do it again being older and having more disposable income some 10-15 years later I would certainly build it more square shaped. I am not thrilled with the slight tunnel effect. Although I have never been the most organised person in the world as my wife will testify, I recommend that you be ruthless with anything in the workshop, question it's value ref the space it takes up offcuts that are no use etc. Think before you take anything in.

Oh and re the permission I was only allowed as it was down the very bottom of the garden a 110' away, which to be fair has worked out quite well. The key is to ask for the most outrageous thing and work your way back to what you want and they think they have the victory

I must be lucky, my wife not only encouraged me to build a larger workshop, she also helped me build it!

I don't do gardening, but I do ensure that she has the latest technology in gardening tools, we men are suckers.

Well Waka I'm no expert but I've always found that the 'quid pro quo' approach usually works

You could also say that you'll have room for a dedicated 'mechanical' bench so anything that needs doing on the lawn mower, strimmer, etc. can be done quickly and she won't be inconvenienced

Failing that how about offering to go live in it ...................that might convince her

My wife seems to be more than happy when I'm in there???? is she trying to tell me something? :D
Regards, Rich.

is she trying to tell me something?

Yes! She wants that damned job finished.
Seriously though, my wifes enthusiasm was two fold, something to take my mind off the up and coming cancer surgery, and secondly my previous workshop was two mtrs square, with my machines in the carport, and the doors she wanted made just could not be assembled in such a small space!
Even my new shop is only five mtrs by two, but after the last one--!

Roy.

Roy, today she said "do you want roast spuds or boiled?" I replied roast spuds and she said "whats wrong with my boiled spuds?" what's a chap to do?
Keep smiling mate, Rich.

Know the problem Rich. My wife can look at wall paper, paint, carpets etc and come up with the most perfect blend, same with woodwork, she tells me what it's got to look like and I make it, she has never been wrong.
She always tell me that I have no taste, I say, 'I married you didn't I?'
She goes and makes the coffee.

Roy.

Roy,

Rich.
PS. are you going to Ally Pally?
