I've booked some time off in october to go hiking in the brecon beacons, and was wondering if anyone here has been and can recommend any decent 1 day treks?

In a coupe of weeks, I'll be hiking in the mountains of Banff, Canada, and want to continue the sport/past-time of hiking. I've been on a few shorter walks local to me and a few years ago I scaled Snowden which was fun, so I'm definitly up for some welsh hills.

Bean is a very keen trekker and scout leader. Try pm'ing him as he may miss this thread

Don't know the Brecons well, but there are some nice routes along the Pandy Ridge just north of Abergavenny, and around Llanthony Priory. You'll LOVE the Banff area. We did it in 2000, and we'll be walking some sections of the Appalachian Trail thru New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine at the same time as you are in Canada. Enjoy!

BB, try the Gower peninsula, the scenery is stunning and the walks, although, long, are well worth the effort, don't forget your camera and bins, 3 cliffs bay is breathtaking.

Regards,

Rich.

You must walk up Mount Pen Y Fan - tallest in Wales! And all the Special Forces Boys use it as a playground
Cheers
Philly :D

Try the Welsh 14: all 14 Welsh 3000 footers in under 24 hours. It's about 33 miles, with 14000 feet of climbing! My mate and I did it two years ago in 16 hours: we were pretty chuffed until someone reminded us that the record is 4 hours 25 minutes. Doh!

BTW Philly, shurely shome mistake: Snowdon is the highest peak in Wales.

Paul

Thanks for all the information guys. Pen Y Fan is definitely on the short-list. After conquering Snowden I fancy having a crack at Pen Y Fan, apparently there is a good walk/hike called the 'Fan Dance' - which I believe Philly ties in with what you're saying about the military, it's apparently (acording to wikipedia) one of their hiking routes.

Paul, you are indeed correct. Pen Y Fan is the tallest peak in south wales, snowden being the tallest in wales generally.

Apologies - I should of said "South Wales"!
It's one of those mountains that you never seem to reach the summit - but a real good feeling when you finally do!
Cheers
Philly :D

Be VERY VERY careful where you park and what you leave in your car. A friend of mine parked up on the Beacons and when he returned from his walk found one of the Park Pangers there keeping guard. The car had been broken into and everything nicked...all his camping gear, clothes, rucksacks, the lot.

If you're driving past and fancy a cuppa then you're welcome to stop by - Hereford that is...not Malvern

I climbed Mt Katadin in Maine as a young boy,its the start of the Appalachian trail.Quite a hike up there and in May the blueberries are the size of quarters.Real nice view up there and it goes to the knife edge(Mountain top to Mt.top) with a stiff breezes as I remember it.We met a lady who was just completeing her 3 rd trip up and down the whole trail.I think she was in her 60`s...what a girl, backpacking all that way.

Roger - we planned to live our cars in one of the pub carparks in town, and 'wild-camp' it over night during the hike, thanks for the headsup, and if we are passing, I'll give you a shout.

Byron - I think you're nearer the Appalachian trail here than you will be in Banff! :)

We're just doing "taster" sections thru the Berkshires, Whites, Greens and Baxter, finishing with an ascent of Mt Katahdin in Maine - but we will be camping - must be mad! Really looking forward to it.
