Made this, this morning,Sycamore,7" tall. The hole is a little bigger than it was as I used the 'seems completely useless' sorby hollow master to scrape the inside smooth after hollowing(I hollowed the rest with a gouge on its side) and surprise surprise it bit, turned over and chipped the edge of the hole, it went for a flying lesson across the garden . Anyway I enlarged the hole beyond the chip and all was well.

I love the grain pattern on this, the inclusion/knot makes a nice feature, glad it stayed put.
Nicely done sir, even if the hole is bigger than you would of liked. :D

Johnny, I like the shape of that, but seeing the time you posted this (10:31) how early do you get up on the weekend!!!

Cheers Guys

Oddsocks, The board works on GMT I think so it was 11.31, but I have to crack on quite early on a saturday as I have to go and do a 'real world' job :x

You've got a natural eye for good form JT.. Love it. My only comment is that Sycamore is a little plain to be left as is IMPO.

Thanks TM & Wizer

Aw, come on wizer, I glossed this one up and everything  If it dries out keeping its shape(or the hole stays round) I will make a contrasting finial for it, to set it off.

Only my opinion JT, it's what you and your customers like that counts.

Clever work, elegant shape and nicely photographed. Have to admit that I know nothing about hollowing and there is a sort of mystique to it. Quite like the plainness of sycamore although there is endless scope for decorating, texturing etc.

I actually like the plainess of sycamorwe, when turned thin it's got a sort of porcelain look about it. Also as said, ideal for decorating and colouring. Helps when you have a lovely shape like this as well of course.

Made a finial lid for it, only had oak that I could darken, not an ideal timber for something delicate but I just wanted to see what it looked like(No doubt when the vase is dry it wont fit anymore anyhow)

I liked it before but I like it a lot now. Its a beauty.

Try African Blackwood for your lid/finial. Small bits are reasonably priced at Craft Supplies and the like.
