It's going to be a side table, it's made entirely from leftovers of American black walnut.

Here is the simple design I did yesterday on SU

389211877_805afe9390.jpg

The legs are a slab design to match our dining table.

First pic is the scraps I used

389050046_bf7c55a7d2.jpg

The top and the legs were cut from 2 1/2" and needed resawing to get nearer to the thickness.

This pic is the wood for the legs being sawn.

This pic shows all the components planed to 1" but still not cut to length.

389050052_022333717c.jpg

The next pic is all the components positioned but awaiting mortise & tennons, and all the rails were planed down to 3/4".

Here it is with all the mortise & tennons cut.

Rebates or as the Americans would have us say Rabbets, added to all the rails for fixing the top on with buttons.

Pic of the first stage of glueup, legs to the longer rails.

These pieces in the pic below will be the breadboard end for the table top, stopped rebates have been routed in ready for fitting to the top.

Time for a cuppa! :)

'cept they're grooves... Sorry, just a small outlet for my hatred at the speed with which you get through projects.

Cheers, Alf

OK ok I surrender, no rebate plane went anywhere near it.  So lets call it routed grooves.

It's the magic of the elleccy stuff that comes wrapped up in wires.

Very Nice, Lord Nibbo. :D

Yes, the cuts on the apron would be called grooves Stateside. The bits in the ends, I would call mortices, but they could also be called stopped grooves. Rebates or rabbets are at the edge of a board.

Very nice looking table :)

What method did you use to cut your tenons

Regards

Andy

Andy if you look again at this pic you will spot a tennoning jig still on the table saw.

Using my mitre gauge set at 90deg I cut the shoulders same depth on each face using a piece of scrap cut from the rails when they were cut to length, doing this I could measure the thickness of the tennon to make sure it was the correct thickness, in this case 3/8". Only then did I cut the shoulders on all four rails. I then cut the cheeks on all the rails using the jig and finished off on my band saw. Those eight tennons took every second of ten minutes.

[edit] maybe I exaggerated a little.... make that fifteen minutes

LN,
how did you join the boards used for the top?

Andy
Biscuits! Three boards, two joints both with three biscuits in. Glue is just PVA, I'm a bit weary about using PVA though with walnut as it can go black. :? :)

So to conclude the project. Just before dinner last night I glued up the top and the base.

390076948_0f4a94bfe6.jpg

This morning I started with squaring the top up.
390076950_618364ed49.jpg

Then cutting the shoulders.
390076953_e8651ab243.jpg

Then I cut the cheek off, easy ennit?
390076954_d50735230d.jpg

Next a little trimming down to size.
390076956_bc7602df3b.jpg

Marking up where the holes will be
390080466_af38273872.jpg

Now with breadboard removed time to drill holes 1/16thish inside the mark. The outer holes were elongated for movement.
390078869_ca646ebe80.jpg

No flashy gizmo just a good mallet to make the dowels
390078866_c0c44c3dcc.jpg

With the outer holes elongated and a bit of glue in the centre the bread board goes on.
390078870_66615e0c72.jpg

A bit of sanding and the tops done.
390078875_09ab25e87b.jpg

A lot more sanding and the top meets the base for the first time :)
390078878_2e87e4aba2.jpg

And with one coat of Danish oil this is what it looks like.

LN,
I had that problem with an oak table, 3 joints and only went went black.

Hardly noticeable now though.

Lovely looking table so far. Not sure I would call a 2 1/2" slab of walnut scrap!

Bob

Well probably not scrap but lets say leftovers form the project before.

Bob, Swmbo just spotted your avatar, did you make it? got any more pics of it? Swmbo wants one  ](*,)

LN - nice table, like the way you've done the breadboard ends, which makes sense...glue only in the middle - Rob

LN

My avatar is of a clock I made from some "scrap" quarter sawn oak. I don't have any more pictures but I can take it down tomorrow and do some. Looks like another project she has lined up!

Many thanks Bob  \:D/

Great looking table and you make it sound so easy! I've never tried "breadboard ends" myself and your approach seems so straightforward. With a top this size is it really necessary or is it part of a design feature?

Cheers, Ted

I designed it that way, but with the top 400mm x 800mm I would expect some cuping even though I did alternate the boards, so the ends can only help keep it flat. :)
