Hi folks

I have in my possesion a drill very similar to this..

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/High-Quality- ... 0704682731

Missing the lower handle tho :(

Has anybody got any info on these drills? cant see a date of manufacture on the drill but there is a picture of a similar item on this old metabo book here..

http://www.wkfinetools.com/hUS-borTools ... metabo.htm

drill type seems to be on page 3, the page linked to says this is an early 30's catalog, but theres no real onfo on when or for how long they were made.

Thanks for any assistance!

:)

we do like a drill thread...! Don't know this one at all I'm afraid, but enclosed gearbox, 2 speed, 13mm chuck apparently. Very interesting, and probably well made (2.75 Kg is a clue). Should be able to match that thread for lower handle fairly easily. A nice one to tune and use I would say.

I need to make a similar side handle for my old four speed drill - I'll take pictures and post them when I can.
You do really need a selection of old nuts and bolts so you can find something that fits, assuming you'd rather not drill out to a bigger size and use the next available metric thread.

You will never guess what I found at the bootfair today for a quid....

And no...I'm not getting into hand drills...but I couldn't resist it....how could I?

Want me to turn up a new handle for you No Skills....it's a metric thread?

Darn things are ten a penny, it seems; I have one too. Pretty small for a breast drill, but always struck me as possibly a particularly good option for the smaller, younger human. Particularly the enclosed gears (having waffled a few shirts on hand drill gear wheels in my youth)

Bleedin' 'ell! They're coming out of the woodwork!!!

Just to let you know No Skills....I found a bolt, a piece of beech and some Araldite Original and it sort of fell together and is sitting awaiting the 24 hour hardening process at which point I will whittle you up a front handle...

I'll leave you to paint it or not as you wish...

Hi Mate

I don't want anything for it...keeps me off the streets!

Just PM me your address....I will pop it in the post

These handles are invariably made of beech...which is what I am using....it is very stable and takes stain and finishes well with a very tight closed grain. I'll turn it up tomorrow morning and post you a pic before I mail it.

Cheers

Jim, thank you!

It's a pleasure...ok the Araldite is now rock solid so to my old Taylor lathe in the bright sunshine (though still chilly!):

This handle has quite a nice curve to it but very subtle...

DSC_0726.JPG

...it would be easy to over-cook it....

DSC_0727.JPG

...so constant checking is required.

I have left it unpolished as requested so you can match and distress if you wish....

DSC_0728.JPG

I found an old steel ferrule so that matches pretty much to the original.....

I have not drilled and pinned the ferrule because then you can remove it to paint and re-seat it when you are done and pin at that stage. It is fairly tight though so you may not need to.

Will post tomorrow

Cheers mate

That's me trusty old Taylor of Hulme...(Manchester) circa 1900...BB

lathe48.jpg

It has a backgear but what it doesn't have is a countershaft assembly (long ago rotted in my neighbour's garden.

It was free...he was going to skip it...mind you...it was in a poor state...

First thing I ever turned on it was the trusty mini gouge you see in the photo above...

I really must get around to finishing the lathe and put some better speed control on it but it does me for now...
