Will not bore you all with all my turning in one go so here is one I produce at the end of last year
DSCF0046-1.jpg

I like to play as I am a novice with the lathe and scroll saw

i really like that a lot, but not sure if it would look better without the base bit, or perhaps a smaller base section, IMHO.

Why do I get the feeling that we won't be ssing many traditional bowls and weedpots from you?

I also am not too sure about the base. Might look different from another angle. If you like cutting shapes into turnings have a look at Mark Hancocks site. He does it really well.

I am keeping it simple at the moment as I only got the lathe last November. The last time I used a lathe before that was when I was at school. And I left there in 1972 ( shows your age doesn't it

Lightweeder

This is how it came off the lathe no sawing except the preparation of the wood to start with. the mahogany started as a cube and turned between two opposite corners. If this is not clear will put a cube into the lathe and photograph it

I would like to see this process if you find the time..Wonderful shape
and form..I like the contrasting base..

Yes, like your flowers on the other thread... this one ticks all the boxes too!
How 'big' can you go with a cube turning like this ?
Its a very pleasing shape. I like it a lot.

Like others, the base is erm.. how do you say this... its not 'wrong', but its not quite 'there' with the top bit. do you know what I mean ?
.. Can you 'refine' the design of the base a wee bit maybe ? I'm not sure 'what to' ... perhaps a few hours experimenting could see something emerge that would really 'zing' like the top bit does,

The top bit... its a 'Wow' ! real "thinking outside the box" ( )
I reckon you could probably come up with something that would be a perfect compliment in the base,.... and thats really going to make the finished piece 'pop' in the eye of the beholder. 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Definately onto a winner there.

EDIT :
You know what I reckon would work ? ....
a 'winged' ( downturned wings that would act like 'four points of contact' feet ) base.
I think that'd work ... just my opinion of course, but maybe worth a try !

I like the concept and as I have beem given a cube of walnut I may pinch the idea if tha is OK. However I also am not sure about the base. May be just me but I have done a few things with added bases likwe this and never been happy with them. It's a personal thing aso just my taste

For those that asked how the wood is mounted for the tri corner bowl

OK here is the set up for turning this bowl Start with a cube this must be correct as it will throw you out when mounting (any size you want as long as it fits your lathe) cut off the opposite corners and then mount in the lathe. Turn to whatever shape you want just remember to leave three points as you would for square bowls.
Here is a photo of the cube mounted

Hope this makes it clearer

Dal,

While you have that on the lathe, how about a set of how to pictures? :D
Go on you know you want to.
