Mornin' all. Ain't it a lovely day?

I've just finished this wee gift for some friends of mine who are celebrating their 5th wedding anniversary soon.

It measures 160mm long by 70mm high and is made from some 28mm thick Iroko :?: that was scavenged from some pallets that turned up at work! (gloat?) Coated with 3coats of Danish Oil. All cut out on my £40 scrollsaw! (Cheap? Moi? )

We get a surprising amount of pallets made from random lengths of hardwood. I've got a big box of Oak, Maple :?: , beech, Iroko :?: offcuts all around 300mm or so long. Not fine furniture grade, but just fine for small projects like this. :D

Cheers.

Fantastic colour in that, we 'pre-cat'd' some iroko at work and it went a horrible lime green colour and looked quite poor! Nice job there though Pren, much nicer like that 8)

An excellent bit of scroll saw work there! Having never used one I can't really comment on how hard it would have been, but I can just see it must have taken some time, skill and patience to get it just right. It really does look brillant! Well done.

Thanks, guys, for all the kind comments! :D Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside :D

I am really pleased with the way this piece turned out considering it has come from a scrappy pallet.

I wasn't sure, at first, weather to leave the wood in its natural state after sanding. The friends I've made it for are all into natural, rustic finishes. The colouration of the wood (fairly sure it is Iroko - am open to corrections) was quite nice and subtle right after sanding. I did a test on an offcut with some Danish Oil and was amazed at how the grain and colour damn near exploded out!

This is my first tinkerings with 'real' wood. I've been restricted to B&Q pine and MDF up until now; largely due to budget constraints. Seeing the wood come alive like that, tho, has really got me itching to have a bash at something like ABW. Quite excited at the prospect of working with some highly figured/coloured timber in its subdued, pre-finished stage and to see it come to life with the application of an oil/shellac finish.

..... Is this what they call 'The Slope' by any chance?

Anyway ... having shown the piece to some colleagues at work before it was posted, I've recieved 3 requests for similar items! One of which was from my boss. He seems to have forgotten that he took the water when he saw me carting some 'firewood' away from then pallet store a few weeks ago!

Thanks again!
