I couldn't agree more. I recently purchased a very nice Record No 5 1/2 from E-bay for £32, including p&p!

I think some people just try it on and hope that somebody falls for this "vintage" tool.

Think i'll contact the seller to let them know........

Cheers

How can a Record 4 1/2 rustball be worth £60? Or £100 on Buy It Now and £20 postage? What am I not seeing here?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... :B:SS:UK:1

It IS an early Record (square corners on blade and rosewood handles), but it ain't THAT valuable, and I thought Record started in the 30's not the 20's.

It's just an ill informed or over-optimistic vendor.

I bought one in similar condition for £12 at Wallington Old Tools a few weeks ago. He threw in a No3 for another £8!

Record started in 1933 IIRC.

That's him. Only open on Saturdays. He's very low on stock at the moment, but says that he'll have a shopload soon (putting in a bid on a big lot at auction, I believe.)

Thanks for that, Smudger  He sometimes has some good stuff - I bought my #05 Stay-Set, Record 405, un-used Clifton blade and un-used Veritas low angle spokeshave there 8) 8) As you say, sometimes he has nothing and other times you hit the jackpot. He's also open Wednesday evenings, I think, from about 5pm till 7pm. Must take a drive over there some time soon - tell me when you are going and I'll try to beat you to the bargains

Cheers

I'll be there on Saturday morning, I hope, after 3 weeks in France with just eBay to play on - and missing bargains because we keep going out enjoying ourselves! That is if LOML doesn't drag me off to a craft fair she's doing 3 days at...

Might try to get there. What time, approx, or you could wear a carnation in your button hole because I don't know what you look like

Cheers

Short, fat bloke with a beard. About 10, if I can make it (pub at 11).

I now see that the item has gone - 'bidding has ended' - it seems only to have been offered for a few hours - very strange.

It's back again on a 1-day auction at £50!
I've contacted the seller to tell them that Records weren't made in the 20s and that I bought one in similar condition for £12. If I get a reply I'll post it...

'A rare four-piece stem rosewood mortice and marking gauge by C. SCHOLL with brass tips, slide and wear discs.

A familiar item auctioned for £460 at www.davidstanley.com'

He really is swimming in dangerous waters.

Just greedy, I guess. I and another bidder have been trying to get a seller to tell us if a block plane for sale still has the front adjuster. I quote from the answer I was given:

Q:The brass adjuster should move the front section of the sole of the plane backwards and forwards. It is essential to the use of the plane. Is it present?

A: the plane looks complete there is 2 adjusters i on the front as in scan and 1 below handgrip just make it out in scan

Huh? Now, is this a lack of intelligence or a lack of honesty?

Another (an 071) is sold as 'superb condition' when the cutters, depth gauge and fence are all missing.
And so on...

Another thing which often make me suspicious in this era of stunning cheap digital camera are VERY bad photographs, which "may" be hiding faults.

Especially from someone with 500+ sales under their belts; you'd have though they'd have got the hang of the camera by now.

It was an 018 and it went for £4.71, so I guess everybody but one was suspicious.

Apart from the photos (I agree completely) there are far too many 'I don't know anything about this' and 'It came from my dad's workshop and he was a master carpenter' descriptions. Statements of subsequent deniability?

BB,

You are so right there!

I have been caught once buying on the basis of a rubbish out of focus shot and relying on the description.
There really is no excuse not to post decent sharp pics and at only 12p each three or four would be good for a more valuable article.

I tend to use composite pics a lot where I take a close up of an important area and place it in an unused area of a bigger image, this seems to work well and several people have commented on it.
Regards,
Martin
