A friend of mine, has recently had to clear the workshop of a relative who was by trade a carpenter/joiner. The chests of hand tools were a delight to see (sorry no photos, not tactful), and my friend will probably keep them in memory.

However he was kind enough to pass on to me forty odd boxes of screws, ranging from some little 1/2"x6 Nettlefolds sold by the gross, to some lumbering great 2 1/2"x12's, and their all slotted not a Phillips head in sight.

So there is the problem I now need a project that requires the use of a wide verity of traditional screws in its construction.

t'was a nice gift though.......Gareth

I am going to keep them for the moment, as I do have one or two jobs that want period screws.

I was just interested that there wasn't a single modern screw amongst the collection, no battery drill/driver, or even a 'Phillips' screw-driver in the tool kit that I could see.

Being a simple DIY'er at the moment, I regard the 'Spax' style screw as a great improvement on the old type, ugly as sin to look at though.

What is the opinion on modern screws from those who use them for a living?

Gareth
