Just had BG in today to quote for new combi gas boiler installation .
I think it will be a Bosch Worcester unit as they appear to be pretty good?
Not cheap but was wondering if its best to stick with BG or should I consider a local company for the job as they will no doubt be cheaper?
I want to be sure that all regs, certification etc are fully complied with for local council and insurance etc but confess to total ignorance in these matters.
I guess that BG will cover all this but would a local tradesman?
Anyone gone through this recently? Any input welcome.
regards,
beejay

It will probably be cheaper with a local company. No doubt BG will want somewhere in the region of £5000-00.

Most Corgi fitters will know what their doing and comply with the Regs.

Look for a company on the Corgi website to make sure you don't get a cowboy pretending to be corgi registered.

It might be worth ringing your insurance company to see which local trader they would use. It's generally going to be a reasonable size local firm. My mums boiler failed and the insurance company sent the company round to seal things off and they then quoted for replacing the boiler did a very neat job at a reasonable price. I think they are after long term business so wish to keep the customers happy and insurance company, if you start ripping people off and doing bad work you won't be in business long. They also set up a reasonable maintenance contract to give her peace of mind, and already paid a prompt free visit when the pressure in the system dropped a bit. It's where I would start failing personal recommendation.

Cheers Alan

If you go to the Bosch Worcester web site there is a list of approved installers in your area. Also lots of specs & other things

Worcester Bosch make very good boiler but you'd me mad to get it installed by BG as they will charge much more than your local plumber.

To get an idea of price for the parts look at discountedheating.com but don't orget to include the flue. Your plumber should be able to get a better price than this but don't expect him to pass the discount on to you.

Shouldnt take more than a couple of days if you arn't moving the boiler. A new boiler will have to meet current regs which means it has to be condensing.

Had a new boiler installed recently(Christmas) and use BG as a benchmark.
We wanted a new boiler moved to a new position and needed three new rads.
After the survey they quoted £5800.00
Local man came in and told us we needed all new radiators 14(and proved it) plus the boiler £4200.00
Great job done and I'm fussy

I think you are likely to find BG rather expensive - about 7 years ago they quoted me and were about 50% higher then the next highest quote.

Hi,
I would say that you can not assume that BG would be the most expensive.

Certainly they would probably be the most competant given the newer bits of legislation.

I recently had a boiler replaced by BG. Of three quotes from BG + two local plumbers the BG quote was the lowest by £286. What was interesting was that BG provided in their quote two items which were to be included due to new legislation which the other two did not quote for/ charged extra.

The install was quick, clean and efficient. The bill arrived quickly too.

Thanks all for your replies.
i've had the BT quote and i'm waiting for one local quote to come in and i'm trying to arrange for another local quote.
I must admit that i'm always suspicious of local tradesmen until they prove themselves or come very highly referred so i will not necessarily jump at the cheapest quote. Peace of mind and after sales are always a consideration with me.
Does anyone know of any regs etc that must be complied with, particularly in relation to local councils and insurance companies?

i've just had my 3rd quote in for fitting a new boiler. I found the company on the internet and when they came today to do the survey and prepare the quote they struck me as a very thorough and professional company.
They covered everything in great detail, just as well as BG did.
They are: http://help-link.co.uk/home.html
Any Northern members had any experience of them? The head office is Castleford.
