Advice regarding courses

Hi folks. I am approaching that special birthday when hopefully I will have plenty of time to turn wood. The family have suggested that they would consider paying for a woodturning course but I don't know who to go with.
I live in Sutton Coldfield which is north of Birmingham and have seen two instructors that may fit the bill.
Phil Irons at Stratford - upon- Avon and Steve Heeley in the Cannock area. I do not want to have to arrange accommodation so I want to stay local and travel for each day.
Have any members of the forum been on any courses with these instructors and would they recommend them or could they suggest alternative courses? I would like to try something different from normal bowls and candlesticks, having been turning for a couple of years.

Best ring them up and ask what they can offer to accommodate your requirements

Also tel them you are not a novice and want something advanced

Most pro turners will do a course to suite your needs

Hi another asking about lessons.
Can anyone near stonehouse, stroud or gloucester give a novice lessons in woodturning and or woodwork I can also persuade the wife for me to go away somewhere as long as she can come to with the kids for a holiday so will have to be somewhere near the coast maybe some where cheap or free to stay.

For more advanced lessons i'd go to someone who offered specialisation in whatever i particularly wanted to learn, so maybe consider what out of the normal you're after.

Near Sutton Coldfield i can +1 the recommendation for Richard Findley in Leicester, (especially for spindle work and using the skew). Another option nearby might be Mark Hancock in Leamington Spa, http://www.markhancock.co.uk/, another nice chap, who does a good line in hollow forms and putting an artistic twist on items.

Thanks for the comments. What I really wanted to know is whether anybody had had instruction from either of the instructors. I know what they do but from past experience I know that just because somebody is good at something it does not necessarily make them a good instructor. At £125 per day I do not wish to buy a pig in a poke.

I was really impressed with Mark Hancock http://www.markhancock.co.uk/ when I spent a day with him last year and know he will match things to whatever you need.
Plan to go back again later this year when I can find the time.

I spent a really good couple of days with Phil Irons doing his hollow forms course - learned loads, and had a great time. Highly recommended!
