I bought a 4 column router lift from Ali Express to play with. Further investigation sugests that a Chinese CNC router motor might make a suitable power source. Air cooled motors go up to about 3 HP and water cooled more still. A 4kW 220v motor is around £150 +VAT.
The 400 Hz 3 phase reminds me of avionics - the higher frequency making motors less weighty (less iron). Would a standard VF controller be able to span say 180 - 400 Hz to give a typical router speed range? How would the power output at low speed, compare with a normal brush moter router, running slow?

Any thoughts would be most welcome!

how does this compare for cutting ability against a standard 1/2", 2 odd kW router?

Well its a lot quieter and has a collet chuck with er20 collets that take up to 1/2 13mm bits down to 1mm if needed
Nothing to wear out(brushes)
Smaller
Cutting ability is the same i would say
