I have to make four stage blocks (rostrum blocks) for our theatre group. They have to be easy to erect and dismantle. I'm thinking of 4'x4' blocks 2' high which will be easy to cut from sheet materials. Four sides held together with theatrical backflap hinges and a top that drops on but located by corner blocks. 16mm ply seems to be the obvious material to use but I'm prepared to be guided to other products. Would I need to have a midrib to support the 4'x4' platform? It would have to carry 2 - 3 adults.

I think a rib would be prudent Rob. Made some moveable platforms for a factory and think I used 12mm ply but added several lightweight ribs made of softwood. Worked really well and kept the weight down.

That brings back memories I made some 30 years ago out of birch ply. To keep the weight down we cut circles out of the sides in a decorative pattern. The front and back side was 4' long and the other sides were made of two pieces to make each side (each piece was slightly less than 2') we used backflip hinges so they could fold into the middle and back again so that it folded flat. The framework was 4' square. I cannot remember how we made the top platform but I think they had joists that fit within the frame to keep the frame square and stiffen the ply.
