My son lives in a 60's terrace house which has a garage in a nearby block, as was the practice back then. There are 20 back-to-back in 2 rows 10 long - ours is an end one. The ownership of each garage is freehold and there are no arrangements for maintenance, the deeds are silent on all of that. In fact it’s hard to find out who owns what and many are empty and left to deteriorate. They are interlocking concrete section construction, concrete floor, decent up and over door. There are (deliberate) gaps in the top row of some panels to allow airflow.

The roof over the whole block is series of overlapping corrugated cement sheets, and it leaks a bit. Who knows where the water gets in and tracks to, the only way to fix it properly would be to do all 20 which isn't going to happen. The ground outside is in poor condition and rain blows under the door when its stormy.

We could just ignore it as most owners seem to, but we want to use it to store things, not precious things. Hot or cold is no worry, but it needs to be dry and have some ventilation. Funds are limited. Self-storage facilities are pretty expensive round here.

Our best idea so far is to build a pent roof shed inside the garage – we may need to alter it a bit to get the height down but essentially any drips from the garage roof will fall onto the shed roof and off to one side, the shed floor will keep things up off the often-damp concrete, the existing garage ventilation and a few well-placed holes in the shed should keep things dry. A box in a box. It seems to be the only affordable solution.

Has anyone done anything similar or is it a mad idea?

Sounds good.

Measure width, length and height and see what fits.

Take into account the space needed for the up and over door.

Consider that there will be a level change between the existing garage floor and the shed floor so a ramp might be useful.

Biggest thing to be concerned about would be the very high liklihood that the roof is asbestos, there's also a good chance of the concrete containing some too so I'd avoid drilling into it if you can.

Good Idea. Two things to add:-

I have my workshop shed in a barn!

I used to work for a London Authority and we decided to build some new houses on garage sites that we owned and rented to tenants. When clearing the garages, having given tenants 3 months to do it themselves, it was amazing what we found. Amongst other things:-

A garage FULL of old tyres
An old Jaguar (car!)
Some illegal items
A good deal of old builders materials

But no shed!
