The blade was re-ground and sharpened.
It cuts very well.

I always wondered if those steel soles were user add ons or did some makers sell them that way. It would increase the life of the plane many times over but there are plenty very old wood sole planes still out there too.

An interesting contrast between your two threads.
One: a wooden plane with a steel sole.
T'other: a steel plane with a wooden sole.

Go figure.
