Started a new project with some of the timber I was given by Paul at Goulden Hardwoods. There was not much of it but what there was looked nice IMO! The tops are from a Plank of English Walnut which will have Ebony stringing fitted to the outside edges. The wide rails are plain Walnut, which looks like cherry in grain but a sort of mushroom colour, the small rails and Legs, are in Sycamore, which I already had. The legs will have a taper to the insides and the rails will have a curve to the bottom edge. Sound a bit weird but will look nice at the end methinks as the timber is all similar tones. The joints are all domino for speed though will be hand planing the tapers and making wooden buttons to attach the top. Have not decided how to cut the groove for the stringing, cutting gauge or Router, stringing will be about 2mm thick.

Will be similar but not quite so ornate as this

Looking forward to seeing this develop - the raw materials seem promising don't they.

Cheers, Ed.

I am watching this one with interest, considering the materials and the size & style of table are quite similar to the bedside tables I am hashing up at the moment. I hope it goes well for you!

Mike

Top's are 400mm x 250mm Legs will be 600 to 650mm high. Overhang 20mm all round. Might put some socks or stringing at the bottoms of the legs, waiting to see what it looks like when I've tapered the legs and had a dry fit tomorrow. It's showing off the Walnut top's grain/patterning that I want to focus on. Thanks for the comments......

Forgot how long it is since I hand planned any great amount of timber! God my arms are sore, and the blisters! Wish I'd bandsaw'd a wee bit closer to the line. No sympathy :?: .......

Anyway, tapered the 8 legs, and cut out the curves in the rails. Only got time to Glue up 3 side rails. It's hard to tell the large rails are Walnut and the small Sycamore?

Got quoted £19 for 10 lengths of 1m Ebony stringing, which I think is very expensive, any ideas where to buy by post?

Here's the pic's of todays hard work, just a dry fit for a look see!

No I think that's a good timber contrast. It's coming on nicely.

Are you using a plan for these Bloonose? Cos' i think
i'd like to try something like this in the future.
Looking very nice by the way. :)

No plan, the sizes were mentioned earlier, but I can give the dimentions for all the parts if you want them? I'm going to try finishing them with Danish Oil, then a new wax product, which I cant remember the name of.

Finished up the tables today, bar the stringing which I have not managed to buy. Wondering if I should leave it off and maybe just chamfer the edge about 40 degrees?

Made some buttons to attach the tops, glued up the large rails, made some slots in the rails for the buttons to slip into. Planed flush and attached the tops.

Don't know why but 2 of the pictures seem to be large?

Chocolate and Vanilla side tables for 2

Bloonose,

That all looks good.........except it is difficult to believe that the long rails are walnut! Are you sure?? (!! :D ). Maybe the contrast will show up when you have applied a finish.

If you are going to chamfer the edge, are you going to do the underside rather than the top?

Mike

Mike, 100% sure, yes the chamfer wiil be underneath like this top but without the Stringing applied. Looking forward to applying the finish...

Yes please, that would help a lot Bloonose. :D

Top's are 250mm x 400mm and 20mm thick.

Legs are 30mm sq, and taper to 20mm, taper starts at 120mm from the top of
the leg on the inside faces only. They are 625mm long.

Rails are 16mm thick and 100mm wide, you'll need to work out the lengths depending on how you join them to the legs.

My long rails were 300mm which gave me the 20mm overhang I wanted as I had no tenon.

The curve is 10mm up from the center of the rail on both small and long rails.

All of this can be easily slightly adjusted, if you want the legs shorter or the top smaller etc.

I also thought that if you found a nice veneered 18mm thick top from an offcut, it could have the iron on edge applied, then the stringing put on afterwards. This would be an easy way to get a nice top/tops without spending a lot of money.

Hope thats enough info? just ask if there is anything I've missed!

Thanks for looking and taking the time to comment, it makes taking pic's worthwhile.

Forgot to take camera to workshop yesterday so just what I did today.

Cut groove round the tops to fit the stringing which I think is too small, may redo later? I should have cut the groove by hand using a cutting gauge rather than spindle moulder as the groove tends not to be even as the boards are a little cupped. Not a lot but when we are dealing with one & three quarter mm it shows. Have oiled up the leg rail sections and then the tops, it makes the Sycamore legs stand out more but the rails still look similar to the sappy Walnut ones.

I have a liitle box made from the other bit of Walnut I had which needs some panels veneer'd up. The guy who I got the stringing from was kind enough to give me 4 lengths of offcut free, I have been very lucky with the freebies latley!, so cut them up and glued to both sides of some MDF which I re thicknessed to 5mm. The box is quite tall so could get 2 from it but they will be rather thin, but made 4 panels to be safe. Have not danish oiled before so after 2 coats whats the script? wire wool then wax?

I like the stringing around the edges and I doubt anyone else will ever notice any minor discrepancies there! With Danish Oil, Rustins' recommend three coats for bare (unsealed) wood first of all. There's no reason why you can't apply wax afterwards, do make sure the surface is smooth first though.

Thanks for that info, I already redid one top/top as it was just too narrow after planning flush and sanding, cutting gauge in future for me!!
