I was approached about a week ago by a gentleman who was looking for a specific box with internal dimensions of 28" by 19" and a depth of 3". It required a sliding lid but otherwise he was happy to leave it to me.
Whilst normally for speed and convenience I use my woodrat for dovetails I decided to have a quiet day and cut the dovetails by hand, whilst I cut them through decided to mitre the top and bottom of each joint to make the corner appearance nicer.
I used some off cuts of Teak for the sides and birch faced ply for the bottom which was let into a groove. The top is also birch faced ply but has a leading lip of Teak which finishes the upper edge of the front - the lid being held shut with a drawer lock. I made the escutcheon from a piece of ebony that I let into the front.
The pictures below show it having just had a couple of coats of pre-cat lacquer - I will rub it down and wax tomorrow.
Making the dovetails was a good chance to put the Narex chisels recently purchased through their paces, as well as the new Quangshengs which I have got to say I am extremely pleased with.
