So the concensus is that you can't actually buy brass inserts...like you can for pens then?

I have one screwdriver, Jim, with the sort of ferrule you are after. It's African Blackwood with a brass ferrule. The end of the ferrule is closed and it has a hole through which the shaft of the bit adaptor goes. The screwdriver was made by Philly and he used to sell them, but I've looked on his website and he doesn't seem to do them anymore.

I asked him about the ferrule and he said that he used to machine them himself. It gives the screwdriver a nice weight as well as looking good.

Cheers

I buy mine from AI - generally at Yandles:

I usually get a small mixed bagful of the AI ferules at Yandles, which seems to last me throughout the year for the odd handle making excercices that I make...probably get hold of few more on the 9th - Rob

Yes Philly used to make them out of brass rod - they had a nice rounded end. They used to be marketed under "British Tools" or something similar through CHT?
Derek Cohen used some nice rounded ones which were sold as shelf fixings in Oz?
I always keep a look out for brass fixings etc - one day might come up trumps?

Here's one (or two) of my efforts  with the AI ferules:

...a couple of octagonal London pattern handles for skew chisels in English Walnut (courtesy of Alf's tutorial). Ferules of any decent size seem quite difficult to get hold of, so it's always worth picking up a few at Yandles from their stand - Rob

Don't know much about this, but Paul Chapman mentioned the CK insert on his very nice handmade ones, on the screwdriver thread. Probably that I think. Looks nice though, fancy one of those. £7 on ebay Jim, less at the fair.

Yebbut...they ain't what I'm looking for....I think I will just turn a few up...see how it goes this weekend.

If I could think of a smart way of making a hex insert I would...trust me!

Will be examining the cheapo screwdrivers with inserts tomorrow to see if any are brass...I'm sure I've seen some somewhere at one of the fairs...will report progress soon!

Jim

Jim - the CK is brass, honest (I guess a harder variant) - it needs to be non-ferrous so the magnetic holding inside works. When you find what you want, I need to see it, will be lovely to be sure.
