I've been offered a baton or half a baton of wood.

I have asked (email) the person offering the wood what a baton is but impatience has the better of me!

Anyone here heard the term?

Thanks

You sure it's not a typo?

'a ton' or 'half a ton'?

I have great disrespect for these modern smartphones that auto-correct stuff to what they think it means.

Oh my, that would be a lot of wood! I wish.

I agree about the auto correct on smartphones though, proper pain in the derrière.

It's a funny thing here in Orkney. People seem very reluctant to share details about where they get their wood from.

Maybe one of these? I don't know what you'd do with half of one, though. I guess it depends on which half. :D

There's a joke about conducting yourself properly in there somewhere. :-D

Maybe they meant a batten? A length of rough-sawn 2x1 ... or half a length?

Recon it's a batten - but 1 single batten isn't going to get you very far...

Both the baton and the battens mentioned are the only versions I have heard of.

The context of the conversation though, it was a bartering deal for web services, suggests something a bit more than half a batten, or a whole baton and something less than a ton (or half a ton).

I'll have to wait until the person in question gets back to me, I just wondered if it was perhaps an obscure timber measurement that I hadn't come across.

This was the offer -

"however I would be happy to sell you or make an exchange for dealing with my website updates if you wanted a baton or even half a baton of some light coloured wood".

It wouldn't be a very good deal if it was for half a bit of batten, for batoning.

I queried it with him and still haven't heard back but then this is Orkney. It's a bit like Hobbiton here, things moves slowly :D

IS there any wood on Orkney? Can't see any trees!

Not a lot! There are a couple of small woods on Orkney Mainland but nothing fit for felling. There's nowt at all on Westray.

Sourcing wood is a proper pain. As I said what amuses me is the woodworkers in Orkney that I've spoken to and they are all very coy about where they get there wood from! "Oh, there's a place down Inverness way, now what's it called. Oh I can't mind on...", "Then there's that place over to the west, but I can't just remember, was it Ullapool, aye it might have been Ullapool way"...

I could understand being secretive about some or other personal technique or whatever but raw material sources. Just don't get it.

Ah well. There's alway ebay and I have had timber form Good Timber. Most places though either charge a fortune for delivery or actually most just plain won't deliver.

Sorry, rant over. It's the price of living in the beautiful location that we do.

It's not quite that bad down in Mainland Aberdeenshire, but still not brilliant. Though these days, I suspect that if you don't live south of a line from the Bristol Channel to the Wash, nowhere is that good, especially for hardwoods.
At least we can get softwoods pretty easily in Buchan. But it's unlikely Northlink Ferries or Flybe would be happy with a cubic foot, metre or even a baton (whatever it is) of timber as cabin baggage if you "popped down here".

Oh don't get going!

Let me say first, we love living on a little island. Peaceful, nice people, zero crime. We don't lock our doors, or cars etc. So everything else is the price you pay for that.

But...

It seems the world stops at Inverness. Even tracked/signed for parcels, by courier, usually don't get signed for here. They're signed for at the Inverness and that's the end of the tracking.

There is a chap on ebay that even makes the point that "if your unfortunate enough to live outside the know universe i.g. Highlands and Islands then ring him for a delivery price.

Most companies just plain won't deliver.

To be fair I can see it with timber as it is heavy but often it is also the case for small items that could just go in a jiffy bag and be delivered Royal Mail at the same price for everywhere.

Sorry, I'm sure regular readers of my posts will have heard this rant before.

Hmmmmmm! Deep breath.. You started it

As for Northlink etc. I could get quite a bit of wood in the back of my 4x4 estate and do have plans for next time we're down south but that in its self is an expensive exercise with two 90 minute ferries out and then two back, plus of course staying over, so it wouldn't make sense just to pick up wood.

I'll take my tablets now. I'll be alright in a minute 8)

Phill have you thought about doing a Poldark on a passing ship? ie shut down any lighthouse warning until its a shipwreck? apparently it was a common trick many years ago darn sarth.

Ha ha, I watched Sunday's episode last night and that was a nice bit of timber they were carrying.

Sorry, I know this is a very old topic but did promise to post back once I knew more.

Bit of background - I was offered a baton of wood for some fairly minor website updates and wondered what a baton of wood was.

I visited the woodworker in question earlier in the week and it was interesting to have a chat and a look round a professional woodworkers shop. He make handmade furniture and straw backed Orkney chairs.

Anyway, to the subject at hand....

Turns out that a baton is pretty much any "full length" rough saw piece of timber. Apparently usually wider than thick I.e. a plank!

In my case what was being offered was a piece of Ash approx 20cm x 2.5cm x 2m long so I was happy with that.

I'm really pleased you did post back as I have found myself wondering if you ever found out!
