It's not quite that bad down in Mainland Aberdeenshire, but still not brilliant. Though these days, I suspect that if you don't live south of a line from the Bristol Channel to the Wash, nowhere is that good, especially for hardwoods.
At least we can get softwoods pretty easily in Buchan. But it's unlikely Northlink Ferries or Flybe would be happy with a cubic foot, metre or even a baton (whatever it is) of timber as cabin baggage if you "popped down here".
Oh don't get going!
Let me say first, we love living on a little island. Peaceful, nice people, zero crime. We don't lock our doors, or cars etc. So everything else is the price you pay for that.
But...
It seems the world stops at Inverness. Even tracked/signed for parcels, by courier, usually don't get signed for here. They're signed for at the Inverness and that's the end of the tracking.
There is a chap on ebay that even makes the point that "if your unfortunate enough to live outside the know universe i.g. Highlands and Islands then ring him for a delivery price.
Most companies just plain won't deliver.
To be fair I can see it with timber as it is heavy but often it is also the case for small items that could just go in a jiffy bag and be delivered Royal Mail at the same price for everywhere.
Sorry, I'm sure regular readers of my posts will have heard this rant before.
Hmmmmmm! Deep breath.. You started it
As for Northlink etc. I could get quite a bit of wood in the back of my 4x4 estate and do have plans for next time we're down south but that in its self is an expensive exercise with two 90 minute ferries out and then two back, plus of course staying over, so it wouldn't make sense just to pick up wood.
I'll take my tablets now. I'll be alright in a minute 8)
