You got it in one. Glue the 2 square originals with a thin piece of paper along the glue line. It will bond but not as strong as normal, allowing you to split them without splintering after they're turned to round.

Warning however, because of the weaker bond, go easy with the tool pressure, have sharp tools, take light cuts and wear a face mask....also keep the lathe speed at a sensibly low speed.

Yes, that's exactly the way split turnings are done.
If you are worried about the joint strength, make the piece over length & bind the ends with tape, elastic bands or jubilee clips (with the ends pointing against the direction of rotation).
Newspaper & PVA are good enough but give the glue time to go off.

That is certainly the way I would do it, the same as when doing 'inside out' turning.

Use a layer of brown wrapping paper and it will easily split along the joint. I also wrap a couple of turns of insulation tape at both ends, belt and braces, just in case you get a catch. Sorby type sprung loaded live and dead centres of at least ring live centres also help to hold the cylinder in compression without the splitting effect of standard two or four prong dead centres and pointed live centres.

A sharp blow with a wide sharp chisel soon separates the two halves when you are ready.

What's the project in hand?

Make them over long and join with paper as already suggested with enough extra length to allow for a screw in each end which can be taken down below the wood surface just remember not to turn where the screw is that way there is nothing to catch your fingers on

If you can track down a truly non water resistant PVA you'll make your clean up easier as you can soak the paper and off it comes. The trouble is now that even glues like green Resin W are partially water resistant. You could use a hide glue or something water soluble.

I echo Phil here - a thin line of PVA and paper is the way to go for me - I have made quite a few inside out turnings and it works for me.

Hot glue is also another good way of doing this.

:D
