Hello everyone, got a bit more lathe time today 8)

I've had an idea for a multi-leg bowl for a while and got around to making it today.
Sycamore 8" wide and coloured with acrylics.

Hi Johnny,

From the top, I think it looks fantastic, your second photo especially :D

Whilst I like the idea of the legs, I'm not too sure about the ones you have used (IMHO). Are they pre-cut dowels you have used?

As always, only personal opinion, and much better than I could do.

Malc :D

Normally a leg man, on this lovely bowl I think they spoil it a bit. Sorry, but fanastic bowl none-the-less.

Johnny I'm afraid in my eyes a beautiful bowl is spoilt by the dowel legs, to me it's crying out for some slender tapered legs to go with the precis finishing of the top.

For me the mix of Class and Rustic doesn't work.

Totally agree with every one else. Great bowl but rubbish dowel legs. Change them and you've got a winner!!

Cheers

Richard

Really lovely bowl, great shape, superb decoration.... shame about the legs :-(

But I kind of get where you are coming from with the numerous legs idea. Maybe they should be thinner & curved, or even made as a seperate stand the bowl sits in (at a slight angle towards the viewer?) At the moment they seem far too "clunky" for the bowl and they overpower it too much.

So I get the impression you don't like the legs then

I must admit to liking using things I have laying around in my work and the perfectly uniform length of these dowels made them ideal to try out an 8 leg bowl to get all 8 in contact with the table  I kind of like them and I'm sure someone will buy it

If I do another I promise to make some fancy legs for it :)

Personally I think that the legs could work if they weren't so obviously dowels. O wonder what they would look like if the ends were all shaped to sit square instead of the give away bevel?

Pete

If you're selling it maybe the potential purchaser wont be familiar with dowels and judge them for the aesthetics, although I must admit I don't like the patchy finish on the legs.
I think the overall execution of the bowl is stunningly crisp and sharp.
I think legs would work well if slightly different.

JT .. the BOWL is outrageously brilliant !!! Its fantastic. 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

In my very very humble and insignificant opinion... bin the legs, cahnge them for something more in keeping with the rest, and you'll have a piece which could easily sell for HUNDREDS.. its THAT NICE, seriously.

Its brilliant. 8)

Thanks for all your input everyone. :D

I've ordered some brass rod for a redo of the legs which I will attempt to turn on the lathe

Jenx,is that an offer mate?

A new lathe!!! You couldn't have hardly worn the newness of that Fox!!

I got a record maxi2 recently, these are worth a consideration, heavy, reasonably priced, smooth, powerful and a joy to use.

The fox is 'ok' for the money ... but there are certain 'shortcomings' which 'niggle'...
I was so impresses by Pauls Vicmarc.. lovely machine.
This isn't an 'imminent purchase' though .. just sneaking a wee stash of cash away from the eyes of the "minister of finance", with a view to doing the deed when I have eventually saved enough up.

I have some suspiscions about a bearing in my headstock in the fox.. which is going to need looking at, today if I can motivate myself.. if not, through the week sometime. Something's not quite right, and it needs a bit of TLC.

The concept of a new machine is something 'tangible', but quite a way off.... and given that my abilities are nowhere near 'needing' it.. there's no desperate hurry... Its just a 'want', rather than a 'need' thing... you know how it is !!! :D  :D 8)
