hello folks does anyone have or know where to buy some 3/16" or 5/6mm steel rod?
on some of my hollow forms my normal callipers will not reach the bottom 1/3rd of the piece, i made some ellsworth callipers out of 7mm ally rod which work -but the ally is too soft/bendy so i'm looking for some steel which will hold its shape better.

I cant take a pic from david ellsworth book as i think it would be breach of copyright but when i get the steel i can take a pic of what i make- the ally ones have now been binned.

Possibly a bit late now....

I have about 40 metres 6mm stainless rod....if anybody wants some let me know.

Chris

some 3/16" steel turned up today from cromwells- excellent service.

heres what i've done

just like David Ellsworth's :D

the silver steel seems to have just the right amount of spring and memory to it- so they work very well.

so you set your thickness and run one side on the inside and use the other end as a visual indicator? Am I getting that right.

Might have to make one of those, cheers George.

yep you've got it Tom

I'm being really thick here probably but if it's thinner than the required dimensions you will get a gap between the outside leg and the wall....if it's thicker how will it be seen as the wire will simply open up and rub outside and inside won't it?

Pete

if you've set the gap on the calliper at an inch and you get no gap then you know its not thin enough yet and go back in- if you get a gap of 3/4" you know your nearly there.
