Last week I was given a demonstration (in the US) by a professional boatbuilder that used 3m micro abrasive paper for the 'scary sharp method' with wd40 as a lubricant. The paper is sticky backed and much more durable than autobodyshop wet-n-dry paper. In his shop he only used a couple of sheets per year,
It comes in 0.5, 1 , 5 and 15 micron.

He got it from Leevalley. Does anybody know of a UK or European source?

Tony did a post about this stuff fairly recently. I think I am right in saying that he got his direct from LV.

Cheers

I've been using these for years. The PSA backing and the mylar substrate pretty much eliminate edge dubbing associated with the scary sharp method.
One of the best qualities is that you can use them to create super fine "files" to sharpen odd items or to get your auger bits really sharp.
I use baby oil as a honing oil which SWMBO much prefers to WD-40.
I've purchased them from both LV and Tools for Working Wood.

And the baby oil (mineral oil) takes the gooey residue off of the granite slab. Smells nice, too.

Thanks Duncan for starting the thread and DaveL for Workshopheaven tip.
Ordered my 3M Microabrasive today. Scary Sharp next week hopefully!

I have ordered from the US yesterday and it is already shipped.

My main reason for going back to this scary sharp is the fact that the micro abrasive lasts so long, and that I dont have to mess around anymore with spraycan glue.

We got this demonstration from Ted Moores, at a woodstrip kayak building class I took last week at WoodenBoat School, Brooklin Maine. He uses this method in his kayak and boatbuilding shop.
