thanks spinks
l think l will get better with some wood turning chisels, l know its wrong to use normal wood chisels but got to wait for xmas and that is a long time to wait haha

It's not so much wrong as potentially dangerous using normal wood chisels. The tang in the handle is not as long or strong as a turning chisel's would be, and is designed to have the main forces down through the handle and blade and not perpendicular to it. Could result in a nasty shatter of the handles, especially if wooden, causing the blade to fly somewhere in the air. You would need better than normal face visor to stop that beastie. The steel may also not be suitable for the sideways forces excreted upon it.
Wat till Xmas and practice safely or borrow a couple of turning chisels/gouges till then.
Thanks Phil
l know what you are saying but it was soft wood pine cut round on scroll saw and very lightly turned and hollowed out by drilling several holes and carefully hollowing out,
First turning? got to be good and shows promise but you really need to stay safe and wait for correct chisels, sorry to be boring and all that but its hard to turn with no fingers lol.
+1 on the safety advice
You WILL get catches as a starter and even with the correct tools its a very good laxative. Also, as has been suggested on these forums many times I would advocate practice at spindle turning for a while when yo get your new tools until you are happy and comfortable with the methods. Watch lots of videos and read anything you can find on turning. There are thousands of videos on Youtube that will help you with techniques.
Having said that for a first attempt that looks very nice .
Thanks for all the advice been watching videos and reading all l can for the last 7 weeks since l thought about getting a lathe, watching all the techniques and digesting all l see and read.
l started off the same way when l started scrolling so looking forward to turning so nice to meet you all.
Thanks Eugene, nice to you are on here.
if you like check out my link below
ps, if you are a mod and this is not ok let me know and l will re edit thanks
Very nice. I'd thought I was doing okay turning my first bowl without a bowl gouge, but making this without a single proper turning tool... That's something
I'd have to add to the voices of caution about trying to use a normal chisel for wood turning, you obviously got away with it and produced something worthwhile this time, but it'd be a real shame for obvious potential talent to be stopped prematurely by flying chisel shrapnel! Isn't there someone that you can borrow a couple scrapers or something from until you get your proper set? As long as you keep them sharp, you'll be able to tinker around making stuff and getting used to the technique and practice until you get fully tooled up.
I reckon you were pretty lucky not to have a nasty moment using a normal chisel as you went through that knot in the picture.
Very much looking forward to seeing what you can do with your proper tooling up and running!
