Pete - the mortar appears to be made from spalted beech. I assume that the spalting hasn't caused soft spots.
I'd also be concerned about the vegetable oil finish as I believe it goes rancid.

I'm surprised that a mortal and pestle would be considered a subject for wood. Some prefer granite over porcelain because porcelain is too soft. Surely, the materials are likely to be ground into the mortar base, or the pestle, or both, whatever the finish? What about staining of the wood by crushing herbs, etc? Looks good, no doubt about that, just doubtful if wood is a suitable material.

I researched this and apparently veg oil is OK if it's not olive. That ges bad. It may be bad if it's left a long time though.

We've been using a wooden one for years and there hasn't been a problem according to the cook. She actually prefers them and has commandeered another larger one that I did at the same time. If you used something like pine or another soft wood I can see the problem however.

You do need to make sure that the wood isn't a toxic one however, beech and sycamore are favourite apparently.

Not this time, it's going towards some netting for the new chickens we are getting. If she wants money she can sell her fabric wall hangings
