Yes, another electrical conundrum.
I recently attempted to use my old Alco Garden Shredder and after a couple of attempts to switch it on, it went completely dead.
I concluded that the most likely cause was a defunct capacitor so I purchased a new one to the right spec. I also decided to replace the main switch, which incorporated an overload cutout, with a new toggle switch and a separate overload/manual reset switch.
A quick bench test of the new components and the motor seemed to indicate all was well so I proceeded to reassemble the shredder. A few more start/stop operations and it was apparent that the direction of rotation was not being controlled. However the direction did seem to related to the starting position of the rotor. Usually it would start rotating smoothly but sometimes it would do a little bounce and head off in the opposite direction.
Any thoughts? Is the capacitor doing its job?

I don't have an answer, but curious as to whether it has a reverse function? Our cheap Lidl shredder does, I imagine they all do - even my old paper shredder in the attic has a reversing function.
Does sound like capacitor, except that I seem to recall reading of faulty capacitors necessitating initial manual rotation.

Hi, John, no it doesn't have a reverse function but I can see the sense in that to clear blockages. On this model it's easy to remove the infeed tube to clear by hand.

Is there a brake that might not be releasing properly?

Otherwise, worth a check of the capacitor, start winding or centrifugal switch.

Seen this on Alko site, some had auto reverse.

"Garden shredders allow reducing weeds and twigs in an easy to handle and suitable size for composting. Shredding operations also allow reducing the material decomposing time. The machine is equipped with Auto Reverse motor. Thus it will be possible to reverse the blade rotation direction in case of clogs.
