I've put this in the General section rather than Turning or Off topic because it is machinery specific and woodworking.....

Anyway: I have a 3ph lathe with belt change pulleys and I need to move it down the shop about 50 feet. A sparky's gonna charge me arms and legs to extend the power supply this distance, well about £70 I should think.

 been doing a bit of reading up and now totally confused.....it seems that I could get a combined inverter to give me 3 ph from single and at the same time get variable speeds. Or have I totally misunderstood? anybody got a better understanding of this or am I in grave danger of disappearing up my own wotsit.

Chris

PS - the motor is 3/4 hp.

If its wired and working you can extend/reposition using the same type of cable your self no regs. broken.

I have put an inverter onto a lathe I own to give me infinitely variable speed with a 3phase motor. Works a treat and phase runs smoother too.

You've got it right if you get a digital or electronic inverter you get speed control & the full power of the motor. Electronic is cheaper if you have a dual voltage motor, most are.

hope this helps

That's the way to go then - inverter gets me variable speed and a cheap move of the machine. Just missed out on one on ebay this am - went for £52 inc' p&p.

With an invertor yes you do get 3 ph from single ph but it's still at 220 volts so I think you have to have a suitable 3 ph motor for this ie dual voltage 220/415

Yup, starting to get the hang of this now - 1 type of Inverter ( the cheaper ones) give you 3ph/240v if you have a 'delta' wired motor - 240/415. The other, more expensive gives you true 3ph, ie 415v. If your motor is 'star' wired - it's only runnable with true 3ph/415.

Impressed huh?

:D
