Patriot Jaws - Ideal Spigot & Recess sizes?

I have heard it said - but don't know how true it is - to allow 1/8th inch opening between the jaws. This should give a perfect circle of grip. If you have a 1/8th parting tool just slot this in the gap and then measure the inside or outside diameters. Other than that - trial & error seems a...

    Hollow form - codename Bagel

Sorry, but I find the shape of the top half a problem. I feel the transition from side to top a bit abrupt. I would have liked a curved rather than flattish top. I agree with others about adding some form of decoration about the join. The finish looks very good.

    Small boxes

Good use of some old fencepost. I prefer the first - the black one. In my view the finial on the second is a little thick and seems out of proportion to the rest of the box. I do not dislike the colouring, and think it does show off the grain very well. I am insure about the unstained bit left...

    Quality pen kits?

I have used Turners Retreat pen kits in the past. I had the same problem with the gold plating rubbing off very quickly. Again I only got the lower quality kits. My biggest problem was the pencil kits - I have had to replace the mechanism of a pencil I did for myself 3 times within a year. It...

    Question about Hegner lathes please!

I am only a beginner with limited time for woodturning at present, but bought the Hegner with the future in mind - hopefully more time. I have the 1HP Hegner. Very happy with it. Very quiet running. Like others the only problem is getting the toolrest really close for small work. However, as...

    Woodturning Magazine #184/Feb

I find the previous comment on Issue 184 a bit surprising. I get the impression that "arty" is not something to aspire to!!!! The issued featured : a) a rectangular bowl - hardly "arty" b) a stacking tower box - hardly "arty" c) a basic bowl from a cored log - hardly "arty" d) an article on...

    Woodfest Yesterday (2nd May)

The local press say over 25,000 attended the WoodFest over the three days. With all the disappointing reviews of shows like Stoneleigh and Woodex perhaps this is the way to go in the future, by offering something (entertainment) for the whole family. If the major manufacturers could be brought...

    Pen blanks

Hi Kenny, Excellent site. My problems with pen turning have really been with the quality of the mechanisms. I have had several pencil mechanisms that have failed after only a small amount of use. I know they have not been mis-treated because one I used myself. This makes me very reluctant to...

    Same but different??

As you admit they do differ in the shape of the coving around the stem feature, but all the same they look good and if they were not next to each other you would find it difficult to notice the difference. Well done.

    Unhandled chisels

While on the subject of handles I would be interested in where you could get handle inserts that could be used to hold interchangeable blades / chisels / gouges. Anyone any ideas?
