For Sale FTAGH - Mahogany wardrobe

The irony is that while light woods are now more fashionable American black walnut timber is around twice as expensive as maple/ash/cherry

    Harrogate Show

I went on Friday. I thought there were slightly less exhibitors and notably no large power tool stand (Alan Wadkins) Woodfast stand was a good alternative to Felder/Hammer. The spokeshaves from Melbourne Tools at Wood Workers Workshop (not workshop heaven) were fantastic and not too pricey but...

    Veneer Advice

I have never been a fan or iron on edge veneer. It works but can be very susceptible to damage. Much better to use a solid walnut lipping which only needs to be 3 to 4 mm thick

    Crisp glue lines in maple

Hand planed joints are almost essential with harder woods. For clamping I would use lengths of bicycle inner tube wrapped around it. The tighter you pull the bands and the more wraps, the more clamping pressure. Sounds crude but it definitely works

    Oyster Veneering

I tried doing some oyster veneering a while ago The larger the oyster the more they tend to buckle and split. You can buy pre cut and dried oysters but they are not cheap Best way to cut then is using a template. Squares are easiest but not the most pleasing. Hexagons look good but a lot more...

Table saw blade loud whistling / ringing

All circular saw/saw blades will make a noise but teeth size and count has a very significant effect. If I had a 96 tooth fine cross cut fitted my 12 inch panel saw is very quiet. Fit a 24 tooth ripping blade and it is totally different, I would also say that good quality blades like OMAs or CMT...

    Vacuum veneering

I make my own vacuum bags from material from easy composites I use a woven polyester fabric as a breather strip (it used in green roof construction). This is essential otherwise the bag can semi seal and not evacuate properly . I dont think it matters where the vacuum extraction point is

Where and what wood to buy?

We do not seem to be well served by good hardwood suppliers in the north west /north Wales area Potters in Nantwich are easy to deal with Dave Hoyle was very good but I think he is now closed For your bench consider what you want from it. To make a really good bench is a lot of work and it is...

    Memorial cross

You could do this as a simple cross halving joint and then do masons mitres so effectively chamfer the edges with a router and then clean the internal corners to 90 degrees (rather than rounded) with a paring chisel

Recommendations for iron-on Beech veneer 19mm

I am not sure whether you are disagreeing with my comments or genuinely asking where I get lipping from If you are disagreeing that is up to you I always cut lippings on the table saw

Recommendations for iron-on Beech veneer 19mm

Oak Faced MDF/Plywood Suppliers in North Wales/North West

Richard Potter in Nantwich do veneered boards I have used in the past but the veneer is very thin (Much thinner than I have had on veneered birch ply) I have also used the single sided and glued it back to back to make double sided https://www.fortimber.co.uk/matrl2.htm

Jig to cut veneers on a bandsaw.

I ran a sheet metal prototyping workshop for 10 years and one thing I learnt was that you have to listen to customer/potential customer feedback. My feedback both positive and negative is based on 30+ years practical cabinet making experience including regular cutting of laminates and veneers...

Jig to cut veneers on a bandsaw.

Firstly full credit to Elisha for developing a jig which does work. Well done The question as to whether it is an improvement over the standard approach is probably not something that Eilisha can really answer due to her limited experience of this process. I think that some of Woodbrains...

    Simonswerk hinge quality?

For better quality work I use Simonswerk or Basta Parsons hinges and havent had any quality issues Yours do not look right on 2 fronts When you open and close them the knuckles should stay flush to each other. Yours look like there are steps The large open gap at the end will show See link...
