    stain removal on oak

Try a solution of oxalic acid crystals, but remember to keep it away from others since it is a poison with irrecoverable damage to the kidneys. However, I suspect that it ain't like cyanide!

    Oxalic acid

Hi there, I've just read here that you can remove a stain on oak with oxalic acid. My question - where do I get it and how do you use it? I hope someone can help with this as I've just glued up an oak counter top that has become stained through (careless on my part) contact with one of the...

    Oak Stained by Iron

Thanks for the replies Think I'll try the Oxalic acid route first as I just want to remove the worst staining. These beams are open to the elements so I am happy with some "character" and there are too many to want to bleach everything Pekka thanks for the practical advice on how to use the...

Oxalic Acid - or "In praise of Rhubarb"

Just received this email from a friend. As you'll see he had a problem with an unsightly stain. He called for advice and I read to him from one of David Charlesworth's books. It seems to have done the trick.

    stain removal on oak

...my thread here. I managed to get the oxalic crystals from my local small chemist and also the borax to neutralise it. I'm told that the oxalic acid effectively bleaches the oak and you can get left with a halo around the edges of the mark. In my case, oak beams...a coarse sander has worked...

    stain removal on oak

hey Mike it would be great to see some pictures of the conservatory, sounds like you have been busy. You will also find that the oxalic acid will clean up the brown stains on untreated oak that are left once it gets wet, The blueing stains are the reaction between the tannins and ferrous metal...

    Oak Stained by Iron

Hi i use a two part bleach that i get from morrells woodfinishes. It is a two part system that is based upon hydrogen peroxide. You have to buy a gallon of each but its quite cheap and works well and is quicker than oxalic acid. jon

    Discolouration across the grain

...I dared without affecting it at all.... Any ideas how it got there, and if there's any way to remove or at least disguise it somewhat - oxalic acid? I really don't want to have to bin these pieces - the timber all comes from one tree and is perfectly matched - and I don't have any more...

    stain removal on oak

I've used oxalic acid a lot. Can I offer everyone a little tip After dissolving it mix in some wall paper paste and make it a gel rather than a liquid, as a gel it can be painted to an area where it will stay put rather than run down if used on anything vertical and because it's in a...

Yes, another vote for oxalic acid. It's sold as Wood Bleach, Rustin's I think, or maybe Liberon. One of them, anyway. S

Buying a gallon of hydrogen peroxide could well result in you receiving a visit by the security services :D. How do you fancy an orange jumpsuit?

    stain removal on oak

I used some the other day (Oxalic acid) and it works a treat....But the correct safety procedures need to be followed....I wore gloves and full face visor and worked in the front of my garage with the garage door open for ventilation... If you look up oxalic acid on google you will find lots of...

    stain removal on oak

You're right....untreated oak will change from that pale honey(?)colour to a nice silvery grey in sunlight but I'm not sure that oxalic acid will restore the original colour as my understanding is that it acts as a bleach. I don't like oiling oak for outside use...seems to me that you always...

...someone else mentioned it will look blue-ish but should turn black. Also be careful, tanic acid is poisonous in much the same way as oxalic acid from rubarb leaves. Oxalic Acid - or "In praise of Rhubarb"

I needed to remove some stains recently and asked advice on this forum (here) about removing stains with oxalic acid. I eventually found some at John Penny. The instructions are very clear about the poisonous nature of this material - there's even a skull & crossbones on the label :!: regards...
