    What are these?

yep, thats the face I'm pulling too. the little old dear who lived next me when I bought my first house (I'm still a child, honest) worked at the ordinance and munitions factory before moving to the Vulcun steam works as a crane driver, she told some great stories. (note, she was also only...

    What are these?

weren't the washers usually premade and they used a wooden dowel for seating though? I have a very very vague recollection of being told something like this on a presentation about Risley munitions factory

    What are these?

But of course you do, you just insist on calling it a lathe. :) yes, I can see it would do a rather splendid job of it and agree it maybe somewhat of a struggle to chuck up a 25mm one.

    What are these?

looking at the pitting I reckon white balance being off is bob on and I gave you a bum steer, they are still hole punches. I've got a few and I've made a fair few too, sharpening on a lathe is just showing off, I normally chuck it in a drill and spin it against a grinding wheel. :)

Does oiling both faces really make a difference?

most old furniture isn't made from slab cut staves in fast grown or forced timbers. Yes I've seen sides cup massively from not being oiled on both sides before install, normally when a mate has decided to fit his own kitchen and either didn't know or didn't care. cost my sister a fairly large...

    Smart home display stopped working

a google search will answer your question as you haven't provided enough details of what you have. but in short, yes, it is very typical, depending on the equipment used. do you mean a smart meter provided by your previous supplier? if so, the almost definitely.

    Welder advice

OK fair comment, I still have a fixed shade in the workshop that gets used occasionally (it's just better for work outside or under LED lamps), I was really meaning that a shield is needed for all types (even gas, although googles are better there). spotting pigeon poop along a seam isn't...

    Welder advice

why just for Mig, any welding short of gas will need one. forget about buying anything yet, go get some lessons. even just 2 evening classes (when they finally start back up) will give the starting knowledge of settings, rates, holds etc. you need to know. there are 2 types of welders in...

    When needing large sash clamps

I usually use a length of 2x3 with a pair of blocks screwed about the right distance apart and a wedge or pair of wedges driven between one block and the work piece. same principle but without the floor board clamps. :)

    Money's no object

sorry, didn't mean to be snotty. hard to answer your question without knowing more though, is it as Rorschach says a giant church door or is it a normally house door? or worse yet a door for one of those rare air breathing sorts who's dad owns half of Kent?

    Money's no object

I'd a buy a house in Middlesbrough, spent 15k doing it up and then make a nice oak door for it for a grand. or I'd invest 29k in a plot of oak woodland a 1k in harvesting a single tree, machining it and making a door. I'm guessing we are all missing the point here though and that you have a...

    Advice on repairing something unusual

Id probably pein a plate then solder it internally at the same time as soldering a ring to the outside. Or id make a brass ring and rivet shank then pein that over before soldering it. The latter would be almost invisible, the former would be visible from inside.

    Aluminium or Steel Squares?

it very much depends on the type of square and where it will be used. something like one of those new fangled speed squares that has found popularity is fine being made of ali, it is never intended to be a precious or precision square (although I see plenty of youtube gods proclaiming them to...
