Axminster 1628VS lathe head and tail stock alignment.

I missed this thread, I have a Jet 1642, and I thought it was misaligned as well, it wasn't (well, it was, but not due the machining being at fault) even though the bed is a strong cast iron construction, it can still twist, so the alignment was out due to the bed not being perfectly level, the...

    Part turning green then season?

I rough mine to about 3/4 of an inch for Ash, Maple is reasonable stable I would guess (similar to sycamore) so should do OK at that or an inch for extra caution, leave a little extra on the base (1/4") and as Derek said, make the tenon over size to allow for resizing later, in a dry environment...

Sharpening: need a jig? Which jig?

I bought a Sorby jig about 12 years ago, always use it, it works well with the Record 8" grinder.

Inside Bowl - Final Cut Problem

If you grind a negative rake (which is a bevel on both sides much like a Skew chisel) then to make it work well, it must also be very sharp like a Skew as well. I grind an edge on mine till it is as sharp as the grindstone can get it, then very lightly hone the edge on a whetstone to maximize...

    Finish woes

To make a repair you could use some sanding dust (always save your sanding dust when you can, keep it in polythene bank envelopes and have different types too) , put a little dust on the torn section and make it as flush as you can, then add a small drop of cyano acrylate (super glue) carefully...

    Burr in blue

Bold move Derek! Not many would colour a quality burr like that, it works well, good choice of colour too, contrasting colours. Very nice bit of work.

    Having fun with cherry

Nice one Derek, I love the smell of green cherrywood!

    Feathered bowl

Beautiful bit of timber, it does look like fruitwood of some kind, and the chatter does suggest Apple, especially if it was very dry, I find Apple to be an extremely hard and dense timber, it cuts OK but your tools have to be freshly sharpened and the slightest "off" moment can induce chatter...

    Natural edge x 2

That's a very good idea Chas, I'll bear that one in mind for future use, cheers!

    Natural edge x 2

A sort of bowl, stretching the term a little. Timber is Hawthorne. Normally I would tidy off the base dovetail, but in this case the thing is so fragile that trying to reverse it to do so would definitely end in disaster, so, I left it as a foot. Finish is Shellac, a bit overdone on this making...

Small pieced form - (Now finished)

Really nice piece Simon, huge amount of work!

    Horsepower and exotics

Just a side note on cast beds (and probably others too) although they are good and solid, they need to be adjusted for twist once you have located the lathe, otherwise the tailstock and headstock will be out of line, you make the adjustment with the foot screws. I got caught out by this with my...

    Chuck identity

I don't understand the question, I do see a single base unit with two screw rings and what seems to be a large collet spreader. I have the same chuck myself.

    First hollow form

Top job! The design is nicely carried out, flowing curve with no obvious flat spots and it looks well hollowed out too, I personally favour no foot on HF's but that is entirely a matter of preference and no criticism of this piece. I like the top bead though, no OTT and adds a nice dimension. I...

    Warm wood

It depends really, how warm? I mean, hot shavings could indicate your tool is blunt, or the speed is too high, if the wood is very hard and dry it's inevitable that some heat will be generated, so check the tool is sharp, take modest cuts (light pressure) and possibly slow the speed (depending...

    Hollow forms and pot.

Hi Marcros, a fine grained timber is usually easier as the lacquer tends to draw-in to more coarse grained wood, though it can still look good (Ash is a typical example of a coarse grain) Sycamore is very good as are various fruitwoods, Holly is also a good finegrained wood. These are timbers...

Bowl in Bowl - Practice Piece

I think it looks great, the finish looks well done, I have noticed though that the orange peel effect can return after a week or so and a secondary buffing can be required to maintain a glass like finish, at least with spray on lacquers. Really like the design and execution too.

    Sectional vessel.

Thanks Robbo, colour, well, that is bound to appeal to some but not others, it's the nature of things, but I agree about the form, it lacks the elegance I was hoping for, but still learning like everyone else. Thanks for the comment! :)
